When Merlin Rainwater led a group of safe streets advocates to create a people-protected bike lane on Pine Street downtown, they finally caught the attention of SDOT leaders and convinced the city to improve the bike lane barrier. This success caught the attention of Los Angeles-based radio show Bike Talk, who interviewed her for their July 10 episode on tactical urbanism (Apple Podcasts/SoundCloud).

Why did it take two people getting hit and a people-protected bike lane demonstration and two TV cameras to make something finally happen?" Rainwater said during the interview.

Bike Talk hosts Nick Richert and Taylor Nichols also spoke to a lawyer about the legal risks is different forms of tactical urbanism actions as well as folks from Winnipeg who used posts and cinder blocks to create their own protected bike lane following the death of Rob Jenner while biking there.
