After just two seasons in the NFL, Jalen Carter is already one of the most feared defensive tackles in the NFL.
And he's still getting better.
This is what I wanted to do," Carter said this spring. I wanted to be the best at what I do, try to be the best. I'm not there yet. I still got a lot of people in front of me that's obviously been in the league a couple (more) years, got years of experience on me. But I'm just going to keep grinding every day.
Not just me by myself working on specific things to get better, just being around the team having the guys support me also makes me also be one of the best in the league."
Carter, 24, made his first-career Pro Bowl in 2024 and was a dominant interior defensive lineman. He finished the regular season with 4 1/2 sacks, 16 QB hits, 12 TFLs, 6 batted passes and 2 FFs. And that doesn't even really tell the full story.
In the playoffs, his sack and pressure on two plays late in the divisional round game against the Rams saved the Eagles' Super Bowl season.
Carter barely left the field for Vic Fangio's defense in 2024, playing 79% of their defensive snaps in the regular season despite sitting out in Week 18. And in the playoffs, he saw his usage get bumped up to 88% in those four games. Before the season, Carter knew his conditioning level was going to have to be great and during the season we found out why.
If you were wondering, Fangio has no plans to reduce Carter's role this season.
He's still a young pup," Fangio said this spring.
If Carter has another big season in 2025, he could earn a massive contract extension. He'll be eligible after this upcoming season and after watching Milton Williams get $26 million per season, Carter is going to break the bank. There's just one defensive tackle in the NFL making over $30 million per season but Carter has the chance to get there.
And he's quickly putting his name among the best DTs in the NFL.
I know who's good and I know who everybody loves," Carter said at OTAs. Dexter Lawrence, Chris Jones. All of them. I see it, but at the end of the day, I'm still grinding and just doing my own thing. If my name pops up, then I guess congratulations to me. Just keep going."
