'One of the craziest covers I can ever remember:' Rams +3.5 backers suffer one of the worst NFL bad beats you'll ever see
For most of the game, things looked good for the Los Angeles Rams (+3.5 at BetMGM) against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Rams were up 19-7 at halftime, 26-7 early in the third quarter and the Eagles' offense - and defense - looked lost.
Certainly, there wasn't much concern for Rams +3.5 bettors, even when the Eagles began a comeback, ultimately culminating by taking the lead on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Hurts to DeVonta Smith with 1:48 remaining to go up 27-26. A failed 2-point conversion meant that - barring something miraculous - Rams bettors would likely cover the spread no matter the outcome of the final drive.
Well ... about that.
Stafford calmly drove Los Angeles down the field to the Eagles' 26-yard line to set up a Josh Karty 44-yard field goal attempt with three seconds left. Unfortunately for Rams fans - and especially Rams backers - the kick was blocked, and Eagles DT Jordan Davis picked up the fumble and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown as time expired.
Final score: Eagles 33, Rams 26.
"We needed the Eagles to win, but Rams to cover," BetMGM trader Christian Cipollini told Yahoo Sports via text message. "So we would have liked Jordan Davis to go down there."
That's a bad beat bettors will be thinking about for a while. At BetMGM sportsbooks, 58% of bets and 76% of the money before the game was on Los Angeles to cover.
"Eagles covering was a small swing, helped us a little," John Murray, Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook sportsbook director said. "One of the craziest covers I can ever remember seeing."
