New York Jets running back Braelon Allen left Monday's game against the Miami Dolphins with a knee injury that he suffered on a kickoff return.

Allen sustained the injury in the second quarter. A Jets defender made direct contact with the side of his left knee during Allen's return, and his knee bent awkwardly. Allen eventually walked to sideline medical tent after spending several moments down on the field.

He eventually walked gingerly to the locker room, and the Jets quickly ruled him out with a knee injury. The precise nature of the injury wasn't initially clear.

Allen shares carries from the Jets backfield as part of a tandem with starter Breece Hall. A second-year pro, Allen has seen limited action in New York's offense this season with 14 carries for 50 yards and two catches for 17 yards through New York's first three games.

He had four carries for 26 yards and a goal-line fumble prior vs. the Dolphins prior to his injury

He also serves part-time as a kick returner. Entering Monday's game, he'd returned three kickoffs for 76 yards as part of a committee that also features running back Isaiah Davis and wide receiver Xavier Gipson.

If Allen is sidelined further, Hall projects to take on a workhorse role out of the Jets backfield with Davis and veteran reserve Kene Nwangwu as his backups.
