Brock Purdy won't be taking the field on Thursday night after all.

The San Francisco 49ers ruled Purdy out for Thursday's matchup with the Los Angeles Rams officially on Wednesday afternoon due to a toe injury. That paves the way for backup Mac Jones, who has won a pair of games already this season filling in for Purdy, to get the start at SoFi Stadium.

Purdy went down with a toe injury in their season-opener, and missed a pair of games recovering. He returned for Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and threw for 309 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in that contest. He said after the game that his toe wasn't much of an issue, but soreness started bothering him later that night.

He has not practiced with the team normally all week, but was hopeful that he could return even with it being a short week.

"If I can play this game, I want to play," Purdy said on Tuesday, via ESPN. "Obviously, I want to get right and get healthy and everything, but we need to win this game against the Rams. So that's how I'm looking at it."

Thankfully for San Francisco, Jones has been very solid so far this season. He's thrown for 563 yards and four touchdowns with just one interception in two starts this season while, most importantly, picking up a pair of wins. The former No. 15 overall pick was briefly limited with a knee injury, but he's since been cleared to return.

Jones, however, will have limited options to help him offensive. Wide receivers Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall and Jordan Watkins were all ruled out due to various injuries on Wednesday, too. The team is also still without wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is recovering from a knee injury, and tight end George Kittle, who is out with a hamstring injury.

The Rams also enter Sunday's contest with a 3-1 record, fresh off a 27-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts last weekend. Quarterback Matthew Stafford went 29-of-41 for 375 yards with three touchdowns in that win, while Puka Nacua had 170 yards and a score on 13 catches.
