At least seven people have died as afierce winter storm sweeps across the US,leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power, schools and roads closed, and flights cancelled.

Twenty-six states, from Texas to Massachusetts, were under storm warnings issued by the National Weather Service over the weekend, with many alerts remaining in place this week.
