When it came to finding their next head coach, the Buffalo Bills wound up selecting a very familiar face to replace the fired Sean McDermott, promoting current offensive coordinator Joe Brady as the franchise's 17th head coach.

Brady was closely linked to a few head coaching vacancies this offseason, and conducted interviews for the openings with the Bills, the Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, and Las Vegas Raiders.

With Brady a hot commodity in the coaching search, the Bills didn't want Brady leaving the organization and finding head coaching success elsewhere, so they opted to promote from within for their next head coach.

Today's edition of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off by examining the Brady hire as the Bills hand over the head coaching job during a pivotal time in franchise history to a person with no prior head coaching experience.

In the aftermath of last week's firing of Sean McDermott, during a joint press conference, owner Terry Pegula and newly promoted president of football operations Brandon Beane said the Bills wanted to bring in a different voice," one that could help the team get over the proverbial playoff wall" following the latest disappointing loss in the playoffs. On Tuesday, the Bills eschewed that different voice in favor of a known commodity in Brady, the man who has been Buffalo's offensive coordinator since Week 11 of the 2023 NFL season.

Over the last two full seasons since taking over as OC, Brady's offense has produced Josh Allen's 2024 NFL MVP season and this year's rushing champion in running back James Cook. This year, in posting a 12-5 record, the Bills ranked second in yards per rushing attempt, third in yards per pass, and fourth in both scoring and total yards. But for all their success, when it mattered the most, with the ball in Josh Allen's hands late in a playoff game in each of the last three seasons, Brady's offense was not able to put away the opponent with a game-clinching score.

With the move, the Bills are banking on offensive continuity holding the key to unlocking their Super Bowl dreams, but if history is any indicator, Buffalo is taking a big risk.
