Cowboys news: Christian Parker introduced as DC in Dallas
Christian Parker's teaching methods will be a plus.
Dallas Cowboys Christian Parker press conference showed Brian Schottenheimer is leading team - RJ Ochoa, Blogging The BoysI'm the oldest of three boys,"Parker told reporters. So being a big brother; there's an element of that in the coaching side in terms of the relationships that you build and how you try to help them learn from their own mistakes but also not letting them fall into the same things that you might have encountered."
In his first coordinator role, the 34-year-old will now be tasked with imparting a new batch of lessons on defensive players- some of whom are almost as old as he is- and turning around a Cowboys defense that was among the league's worst in multiple categories last season.
It will start with language.
What are we calling formations and passing concepts and route concepts? What is our language for tackling and taking the ball away? And the front structures? Coverages? The whole nine, you just go through the whole process and take it piece by piece."
The fact that the Cowboys will field an all-new defensive strategy for the fourth straight year means that there is no longstanding terminology to either keep or discard. As it was for Mike Zimmer and Matt Eberflus before him, Parker will basically have a clean slate to start from.
Parker says he plans to build a scheme around his players rather than acquiring a certain type of player to fit a predetermined scheme.
If we can win on blitzes on a running back, then we're going to blitz a lot," he explained. If we've got good man-to-man corners, we're going to play man. If we have guys that are better with zone vision, we're going to play more zone. You want to build a package that has diversity and scheme, and then you want to tailor it to the players that you have."
The absence of Jerry and Stephen Jones is telling.
Christian Parker's promise of flexibility is a welcome change for Dallas Cowboys' defense - Calvin Watkins, Dallas Morning NewsBrian Schottenheimer may indeed be running the show. The Dallas Cowboys held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon to introduce Christian Parker as the team's new defensive coordinator and right out of the gate something stood out.
There were only two people present. The two in question were head coach Brian Schottenheimer and Parker himself.
It may seem like we are being overdramatic here, but you have to recognize that this is the Dallas Cowboys we are talking about.Everypress conference or appearance where the team has a spokesperson present has involved either Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, or in some non-football settings another member of the Jones family.
This press conference was directly in relation to thefootballpart of the franchise and that neither Jerry nor Stephen were in attendance spoke volumes. It is similar to how Jerry Jones did not hold court on his bus at the NFL combine last year (we will see if that repeats itself next week) and offered the actual coaches the opportunity to speak on behalf of what they are tasked with doing - coaching the football team.
Christian Parker laid out what his philosophy will be in Dallas.
FRISCO - One of the biggest complaints from the players and eventually from some in theCowboys'front office, mainlyteam owner and general manager Jerry Jones, was a lack of flexibility in the defense from the 2025 season.
How Cowboys ended up hiring Christian Parker as their new defensive coordinator - Jon Machota, The AthleticWanting to play more man-to-man. Wanting to blitz more. Wanting to simplify the calls in the secondary. These were constant issues in 2025.
Christian Parkerwas introduced as the Cowboys' newest defensive coordinator, the fourth in the last four years, on Wednesday afternoon from The Star, and he provided a big reason why he got the job: flexibility.
Parker said the Cowboys will play a base 3-4 defense, which we haven't seen since Rob Ryan was calling the defensive plays in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. But Parker also noted the team will use four-man fronts and five-man fronts.
He seemed to hint at playing more man-to-man defense in the secondary and mentioned the traits ofcornerback Shavon Reveland how he's good in man coverage.
First thing, we're going to be multiple," Parker said at a news conference withcoach Brian Schottenheimer.I think that whenever you form a defensive structure, it's about the players that you have. So our core principles, we'll be a 3-4 by nature. 4-3 spacing will be appropriate. 4-2-5 in nickel, different front structures, coverages behind it. But I will say being multiple is probably the most important thing about it."
Matt Eberflus, the previous coordinator who lasted a season after his defense allowed a franchise record 511 points and finished 30th in yards allowed, stuck with his defensive scheme too long anddidn't make quick enough adjustments.Communication was also a problem, whether it was from coach to player or coach to coach, it didn't seem everyone was on the same page.
The coach hired before Eberflus, Mike Zimmer, tried to keep some of the defensive scheme employed by the coach before him, Dan Quinn, and regretted it. Then Zimmer tried to go back to what he's familiar with.
That 2024 defense gave up the second-most touchdowns (55) in franchise history.
Breaking down how Christian Parker got to Dallas.
FRISCO, Texas - The Dallas Cowboys conducted 40 interviews to fill out their new defensive coaching staff. Nine of those interviews were for the most important position - defensive coordinator.
Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Christian Parker was the most impressive throughout the process.
The 34-year-old was officially introduced during a Wednesday news conference at The Star alongside Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Every impression we had with CP just left us wanting more," Schottenheimer said. The conviction that he has, but curious, his calm demeanor, just the way he carries himself, is awesome. The process was thorough. It was long. ... We got into the weeds. Every time we spent time with CP, it became very clear that he was the guy for the job.
He's wise beyond his years. ... Every time we talked, we'd get off a call or get off a zoom or get (done) with an interview, and I'd just be like, Damn, I want more of that.'"
Parker said the defense will be multiple with a 3-4 base alignment with 4-2-5 looks in their nickel packages.
Confidence comes from preparation, and I think I've been able to learn from the right people," Parker said. When you've been involved with different people along my journey that I've learned under as head coaches and defensive coordinators, No. 1, and then the diversity of scheme that I've been involved with, you then become accustomed to what you're comfortable with and your own ideas, you like certain things, you don't like certain things, what will work, what won't work.
I think as you get involved with different people, you kind of form your own identity, so when you have that opportunity you know what you want to do. And I've kind of gone through that process internally for a great deal of my career. I've prepared as much as I possibly can at this moment."
