As Seahawks look to retain Coby Bryant, Jets trade for a veteran safety

It's the Monday before the new NFL league year starts at 4pm New York time on Wednesday.

That, of course, means that it's the week of the frenzy that is the first week of free agency in the NFL, and while the legal tampering period has yet to start, there's no shortage of activity when it comes to trades and extensions.

Thus, while reports have the Seattle Seahawks working hard to retain soon-to-be free agent safety Coby Bryant, the New York Jets have reportedly agreed to acquire veteran safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Miami Dolphins.

Trade: The Miami Dolphins are sending Minkah Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets in exchange for the 2026 seventh-round pick from the Chargers, per ESPN sources.

Fitzpatrick, who will turn 30 before the 2026 season ends, had one year remaining on his current contract, meaning that the three-year, $40M extension should put him under contract with the Jets through the 2029 season.

In addition, for those looking for an indication of where the market for Coby Bryant might fall, the Jets had heavily rumored to be in pursuit of Bryant, meaning giving up draft capital and signing Fitzpatrick to an extension could easily be an indication that either the cost of signing Bryant got too high or Bryant opted to go elsewhere.

In any case, the Jets now have a safety who will turn 30 later this year under contract through 2029, while Bryant, who will turn 27 later this month, remains slated to become a free agent when the new league year starts Wednesday, though that could easily change.
