What was the best overall move so far? Jeremy Fowler, national NFL reporter: The Giants signing tight end Isaiah Likely. A tight end who gets open is a friendly addition for a young quarterback, and Likely will be that for Jaxson Dart. His presence allows New York to lean into two tight end sets, and at $40 million over three years, Likely's contract is cheaper than that of former Giants receiver Wan'Dale Robinson, who signed a four-year, $78 million deal with Tennessee.

TE Isaiah Likely, New York Giants. As a backup with the Baltimore Ravens, Isaiah Likely had to split snaps with Mark Andrews, one of the league's premier pass-catching tight ends. Yet he carved out a role and showcased his receiving skills, hauling in 135 passes for 1,568 yards and 15 touchdowns in 63 outings.
Likely will have competition for targets if Malik Nabers takes on a full workload after missing 13 games with a torn ACL last season. That said, New York didn't re-sign high-volume receiver Wan'Dale Robinson, who saw 140 targets in each of the previous two campaigns. Also, new Giants receiver Darnell Mooney has seen more than 72 targets in a season once over the last four years.

It's shocking that the Giants haven't made a single move on the defensive line. The run defense has been an Achilles heel and they've done nothing to address that weakness up front. There are a few solid veteran options available, but the market has been thinning and prices haven't been dropping. The Giants need to pull the trigger on the signing of a vet (or two) with more reinforcements coming in the draft. DJ Reader and Calais Campbell stick out as the most attractive remaining free agents.

New York Giants: LB, WR, DI. The Giants have made several moves under new head coach John Harbaugh to fill out their roster. There are still needs at multiple key positions, though, including at linebacker, where they could be in a position to find a starter in the draft to pair with newly acquired ex-Bear Tremaine Edmunds.

Defensive tackle could also be an area of focus despite the presence of Dexter Lawrence. None of the Giants' qualified defensive tackles, including Lawrence, earned a PFF run-defense grade above 57.0 last season. Improvement at wide receiver is also an option for them, particularly with the fifth overall pick, where Ohio State's Carnell Tate and Arizona State's Jordyn Tyson could be under consideration.

John Harbaugh's prudent and at times frugal spending, with a heavy concentration on one-year contracts and Band-Aid deals at positions of need, seems to signal a longer-term approach rather than any rushed urgency toward retooling the current team for an immediate 2026 run.
So although he is patching together this year's roster as best he can, it is clear that Harbaugh's focus here is on long-term sustainability. He is not overcommitting deep into the future to many new players on this roster. This strategy helps the 2026 team try to return to a baseline of competence by giving the special teams units a complete facelift and targeting veterans such as Calvin Austin II, Darnell Mooney, Greg Newsome II and Ar'Darius Washington at reasonable costs. But it does not tie up the Giants' salary cap or sacrifice draft assets in 2027 and beyond.

John Harbaugh has an idea of how he wants the New York Giants' defense to evolve under new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson.

The Giants will look to be physical, aggressive and fundamentally sound from a talented front to a secondary that thrives on that pressure created, not without a significant presence in the middle to aid the quest to stop the run.

Spotrac shows that the Giants have a Top 51 figure of approximately $22.3 million, but many of the contracts agreed to over the past week have yet to be reported.

The Giants can naturally perform more housekeeping and cut some veterans, such as kicker Graham Gano, and rework the contracts of others to realize more cap space.
