Generative AI has significantly impacted several industries; the educational sector hasn't been left out. In a rapidly evolving educational landscape, teachers are turning to generative AI to tackle fresh challenges in the classroom. As the use of AI tools continues to gain momentum, educators have also innovated to leverage technology.

Among other AI tools, MagicSchool has been a popular tool that works on text generation algorithms of OpenAI. Tim Ballaret, a dedicated high school teacher in south Los Angeles, discovered the potential of generative AI after recommendations from colleagues and influential teachers on social media.

He started using MagicSchool to create word problems in mathematics customized to students' interests. He involved problems based on specific interests like Minecraft and Taylor Swift. Further, he used the tool to lesson plans throughout the year and applied it in a science and engineering class.

More Teachers Turning To Generative AI Compared To Students

An interesting trend reveals that in the US, a higher number of teachers are using generative AI compared to students. This shift reflects a growing interest among educators to leverage technology to streamline academics. This explains why AI tools like MagicSchool have recorded around 150,000 users in just four months.

Teachers can also input details to receive highly tailored advice to address behavioral issues.

The paid version of the AI tool costs around $9.99 a month per teacher. This brings a wide array of features to educators to enhance their teaching approaches.

Adeel Khan, the founder of MagicSchool, states that the platform provides prompts to teachers based on their best practices. Thus, they can access valuable training materials to enhance their teaching experience.

Teachers can use the tool to create tests and worksheets and adjust teaching materials considering the needs of their students. The software is also capable of designing individual academic programs to fulfill the needs of special students.

Adopting AI Can Address Teacher Shortage Issues

Adopting generative AI seems to be a viable answer to address potential issues in American pedagogy, such as the shortage of teachers and teacher burnout.

Educators can make academic lessons more engaging while streamlining administrative tasks through AI.

However, experts like Tuan Nguyen state that although AI can improve instruction and save time for teachers, it may fail to resolve broader issues like inadequate pay or working conditions. In this context, he stated, I don't think they are going to change the teacher labor market".

Despite the ongoing concerns, organizations like the AI Education Project are training thousands of teachers to leverage the power of AI tools in classrooms. The project aims to train educators in using AI as a valuable tool for carrying out tasks like lesson planning and communicating with parents.

The Ednovate group of charter schools in Los Angeles has already deployed generative AI across their curriculum. It encourages teachers to use AI in every aspect of their instruction. While some teachers may question their dependence on AI by equating the act to cheating, the actual sentiment is that AI should be considered as a tool to enhance training rather than replace teachers.

Among the key challenges associated with the use of AI in education is the need for careful monitoring. The quality of content generated by AI tools should align with established academic standards and goals. The American Federation of Teachers has established a committee after recognizing these challenges to develop best practices for teachers using AI.
