Undrafted rookie cornerback Thaddeus Dixon has suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon, ending his chance to stick with the New York Giants before it truly began.

Dixon was injured during workouts on Wednesday, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport. The Giants confirmed the injury Thursday afternoon.

The Giants placed Dixon on season-ending injured reserve on Thursday, and signed veteran defensive end Khalid Kareem to their 90-man roster. Kareem has played in 34 games over six NFL seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, and Atlanta Falcons.

Dixon, out of North Carolina, was guaranteed $282,500 by the Giants to sign with them after the draft. That equals a full season's practice squad salary, plus a $35,000 signing bonus.

The belief was that the 6-foot, 195-pound Dixon could work his way into the mix as a back cornerback and special teams contributor. Dixon had a 30' visit with the Giants prior to the draft.

The Dixon injury is perhaps why the Giants hosted free agent cornerback Nazeer Johnson for a visit on Thursday.

Dixon played two collegiate seasons at Washington and one at North Carolina. In 34 games, he had two interceptions and 22 passes defensed.
