Commanders Camp Talk: Practice updates from Dan Quinn and Daronte Jones
The Washington Commanders training camp rolls on for Day 10 in Ashburn, VA. The team was in pads yesterday, but will have a lighter practice on Tuesday. The Commanders are hosting the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday with a later start time, and that session should be loaded with action for fans to watch.
Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to reporters before the start of Tuesday practice. Defensive coordinator Daronte Jones is scheduled for his first Q&A of training camp after practice, along with players getting interviewed on the field. Nick Allegretti (calf) and Trey Amos (ankle) will both miss the first preseason game vs the Dolphins on Friday night. Quinn said he expects Allegretti to be on the field when the team returns to practice on Sunday, but Amos needs to be reevaluated after landing awkwardly while covering Terry McLaurin shortly after returning to practice.
Washington is dealing with a more serious injury that will affect most, or all of the season depending on if Laremy Tunsil can return from a torn triceps. Brandon Coleman is shifting over to left tackle from a position battle at guard. He's the starter there again, a position he has started 18 games at over his first two years in the NFL. Quinn said Tunsil's injury isn't ideal, but the team has confidence in Coleman and he's put he work in to be able to take over.
Quinn praised Stefon Diggs' high football IQ, and said his addition could shift roles for other players, though he's also elevating his new teammates. That's especially true for the younger players. Quinn talked about other veterans like Van Jefferson, who he called exacting, sits down in the zone, the catch location, so...man is that a good feeling for a QB. OK, this zone, right spot, right location, get the right yards."
Treylon Burks slimmed down this year, and Quinn said he's been able to go faster and be more athletic with his lighter weight. He brought up big catches on the sidelines and on the field as examples of that.
