Christian Gonzalez and the New England Patriots have agreed on a four-year, $135 million extension late on Monday night, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

The 24-year-old is now the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL and the highest-paid player in Patriots history. Defensive lineman Milton Williams owned the record previously after signing a four-year, $104 million ($63 million guaranteed) deal during free agency in March 2025.

Gonzalez is now one of two cornerbacks in NFL history to reach a deal worth more than $130 million. Seattle Seahawks star Devon Witherspoon signed a four-year, $132 million extension last month, which briefly made him the highest-paid player at the position.

The Patriots appeared to confirm the new deal on social media on Monday night.

A second-team All-Pro in 2024 and a Pro Bowler last season, Gonzalez was the Patriots' first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. After playing only four games during his rookie season due to a torn labrum and dislocated shoulder, he suited up 16 times in 2024, recording 50 solo tackles and two interceptions.

Gonzalez didn't play until Week 4 last season due to a hamstring injury suffered in preseason. He ended up appearing in 14 regular-season games and made a career-high 69 total tackles and 10 pass deflections. During the Patriots' run to Super Bowl LX, he made a game-clinching interception off Denver Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham late in the fourth quarter of the AFC championship game.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft revealed on the first day of training camp that the team has offered the cornerback a record-setting extension.

"We love Christian Gonzalez," Kraft said. "We love him as a player, as a person. That's why we've made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and coincidentally, it's the highest contract in the Patriots' franchise history. So we're glad we drafted him and we developed here, and we hope he'll be with us for a long time."

Gonzalez is entering his fourth NFL season and was eligible to sign an extension on his rookie contract. The Patriots picked up his fifth-year option in the offseason, and the Oregon product reported to training camp as negotiations were ongoing.

With the Patriots opening the new season Wednesday night in Seattle, the two sides got Gonzalez's deal done just in time.
