Rams-49ers Week 1 advantages

The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers open up their 2026 season with a matchup that features plenty of intriguing storylines on both sides of the football. With two talented rosters set to meet in Week 1, several areas could play a significant role in determining how the game unfolds. From offensive production and defensive execution to special teams and coaching, each category presents a different set of strengths and challenges for both teams. The Rams enter the matchup with expectations of making a deep postseason run, while the 49ers will look to establish themselves immediately against a familiar NFC West opponent. Before kickoff, here is a look at four key Week 1 advantages-offense, defense, special teams and coaching-that could help shape the outcome of Rams-49ers in Melbourne.
OFFENSE: RAMSThe Rams offense returns every single piece from its 2025 team that finished second in the NFL in scoring offense, including MVP Matthew Stafford. Running backs Kyren Williams and Blake Corum provide a strong tandem in the run game, while Puka Nacua and Davante Adams provide a 1A and 1B threat in the passing game. The Rams usage of 13 personnel will be on display as they boast five tight ends capable of seeing time.
The 49ers offense isn't bad as Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, Mike Evans, Trent Williams, and George Kittle carry loads of NFL experience. However, the 49ers have been nursing injuries throughout the summer; leaving some to wonder how they will transition back into the speed of the season.
DEFENSE: RAMSThe Rams caught the attention of the NFL world when they traded for Trent McDuffie and Myles Garrett this offseason. In addition, they added Jaylen Watson to the secondary. Oh.. and there is Aaron Donald. Even though, he will be inactive for this matchup, the Rams carry Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, Tyler Davis, and Poona Ford along their defensive line; arguably the best in the NFL.
The 49ers defense continues to age. Fred Warner and Nick Bosa return in 2026 after suffering season-ending injuries in 2025. The team also just announced that Alfred Collins will miss the entire 2026 season as of two days ago. San Francisco's defense should be better than last year but can they slow down the Rams offense?
SPECIAL TEAMS: 49ERSUntil proven otherwise, the Rams need to dig themselves out of the hole they made with their special teams issues from 2022-2025. Harrison Mevis has gained confidence from the fanbase but questions still remain at punt returner and the team's coverage units.
Eddy Pinero is San Francisco's place kicker and he was pretty clutch over for the team in 2025 after a stint with the Carolina Panthers. SF may have some coverage issues of their own but the Rams special teams was historically bad in 2025.
COACHING: RAMSIt's a tight call in fairness but Sean McVay is the better coach. His seamless switch from 11 personnel as the team's base offense to 13 personnel has been fascinating in the coach's evolution. When the chips are in the middle, McVay usually rises to the moment unlike his opponent...
Shanahan might be better with his schematics and play calling but their is certainly scrutiny to be had over how he disappoints in big moments. Shanahan's brain has always led him to be a top 5 offensive mind but he needs the allocades to catch up to McVay's status.
