What a difference a week makes.
The Denver Broncos were coming off an embarrassing blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, and things looked dire in Broncos Country. The offense looked bad, Bo Nix had one of his worst career games, Davis Webb's debut as a playcaller was a failure, and the defense looked bad and had a ton of missed tackles.
To make things worse, the Broncos would be hosting their home opener vs. a very good Jacksonville Jaguars team that has been playing like one of the better teams in the league and beat the Broncos by double digits last season.
Well, the Broncos bounced back and had one of their classic 4th-quarter comeback victories. Things started rough early on, but the defense played well, and Bo Nix, Jaylen Waddle, and rookie Jonah Coleman helped lead the Broncos to a victory.
Stock up and stock down is a weekly series where I go through the Denver Broncos roster and give you stock-ups and stock-downs on every player currently on the 53-man roster. After a bounce-back performance like that on Sunday, we are going to see a lot more stock-ups than we did last week.
QuarterbackBo Nix - Stock up: After having one of the worst games of his career on Monday Night, Nix bounced back and gave us a classic Bo Nix performance. There were some struggles early on, but he was moving the ball up and down the field fairly easily against the Jaguars' defense. However, red zone struggles really hurt what could have been a big game for Nix. Still, he passed for 288 yards and a touchdown and led yet another 4th-quarter comeback vs. a pretty good Jaguars team.
Jarrett Stidham - Unchanged: Remains the backup quarterback
Sam Ehlinger - Unchanged: Remains the emergency third-string quarterback
Running BackJK Dobbins - Stock down: The veteran back left the game due to a hamstring injury, which thankfully sounds minor, but we'll see how it trends as the week progresses. With his injury history, it is concerning to see an injury pop up this early in the season. Pair that with his multiple goal-line failures and rookie Jonah Coleman looking really good, and you have to go stock down on JK Dobbins.
RJ Harvey - Unchanged: Harvey was inactive for this game due to a hamstring injury, but he was able to put in two limited practices, so it sounds like he may not miss much more time moving forward. I am going with unchanged simply because his role is not in danger. He is the Broncos third down/pass game specialist. We saw him get plenty of touches and snaps in the opener, and when healthy, I believe his role is locked in on this offense.
Jonah Coleman - Stock up: Coleman entered the game late due to JK Dobbins leaving with a hamstring injury and played really well. He scored his first career touchdown, which was the go-ahead score, and helped the Broncos ice the game late, which has been something they have struggled to do in recent history. Coleman is the future starter of this backfield; it's just a matter of when, not if.
Tyler Badie - Stock up: I thought Badie played well. He had a 27-yard catch-and-run and had a couple of nice returns in the kicking game. That's what he's supposed to do, and I thought he played well, all things considered.
Adam Prentice - Stock down: He played just 8 snaps of offense and wasn't used in the Broncos' goal-line failures in the first half. He was a short-yardage specialist last season and in the preseason, but the Broncos have yet to pull that trigger this season.
Wide ReceiverJaylen Waddle - Stock way up: That's more like it. After a 1-catch for 2-yard performance in Week 1, Waddle exploded for 8 catches for 138 yards. He made multiple key plays in big moments and looked like the explosive playmaker the Broncos traded for this offseason. This should be the first of many big games from the Broncos' explosive wide receiver.
Courtland Sutton - Stock down: His role in this offense appears to have taken a step back. Had a down Week 1, and unlike Waddle, the veteran didn't do too much in Week 2. He finished with 3 catches for 25 yards and was targeted just 4 times. I still feel like we'll have a few big Sutton games, but his week-to-week performance is probably going to continue to be inconsistent.
Pat Bryant - Unchanged: 0 targets and 1 end-around for 16 yards. It wasn't a great game on paper for Bryant, who was also flagged for another holding call (Like the other ones on Monday Night; it seemed kinda BS), but I am not going to overreact here. The team really likes their second-year wide receiver, and this week was just the Jaylen Waddle show.
Marvin Mims Jr. - Stock down: Injuries suck. The Broncos All-Pro returner has been dealing with multiple injuries throughout the summer. He missed time during camp, returned for the preseason, and then was hurt again; he played in Week 1, got hurt, and then missed Week 2. He just needs to get healthy and stay healthy.
Troy Franklin - Stock up: I went with stock down due to his bad OPI on Monday Night, but I am going with stock up due to his nice one-handed catch on Sunday. He played just 13 snaps and was targeted 2 times, so the usage isn't great, but he made the most of his opportunity on Sunday.
Lil'Jordan Humphrey - Unchanged: He is who he is and fills a depth role on the offense and special teams. He didn't play much on Sunday, but that was expected.
Tight EndAdam Trautman - Unchanged: An in-line blocking specialist who played 65% of the snaps, but you wouldn't really know it if you watched the game. 0 targets and was strictly in for blocking.
Evan Engram - Stock up: He was targeted just once on Sunday but made a tremendous catch late in the game. He played 52% of the snaps and made the most of his lone target, so I am going stock up.
Nate Adkins - Stock up: Is Nate Adkins really the Joker? (Sorry). The blocking specialist led all tight ends with 3 catches for 32 yards and 1 touchdown. He actually had the second-most receiving yards on the team, only trailing Jaylen Waddle. He played 37% of the offensive snaps, contributed on special teams, and does all the dirty work that typically goes unrecognized by fans. Need games like this from your depth players throughout the year.
Dallen Bentley - Unchanged: The rookie tight end was inactive and is likely having a red-shirt year for the Broncos.
Offensive LineGarett Bolles - Unchanged: I'll say this each week, I am not an OL expert, but the unit looked better this week. Nix was not sacked, and I did not see the pressure get to him as it did vs. the Chiefs.
Ben Powers - Unchanged: Same story here with Powers. Did not really notice him, which is usually a good thing for a lineman.
Luke Wattenberg - Stock down: Simply for the delayed snap on the 3rd-down goal-line toss play. It threw off the play from the start, which immediately doomed it from the start.
Quinn Meinerz: Stock up: He pancaked a dude.
Mike McGlinchey - Stock up: Struggled vs. the Chiefs but appeared to have a better game on Sunday.
Alex Palczewski - Unchanged: Played just 4 offensive snaps and is your top reserve OL.
Matt Peart - Unchanged: Didn't play a single snap but is your backup tackle.
Alex Forsyth - Unchanged: Did not play a single snap but is your backup center.
Kage Casey - Unchanged: Inactive and likely having a rookie redshirt year.
Defensive LineZach Allen - Stock up: He's unblockable at times and was in there on multiple pressures and sacks despite not being credited with one.
DJ Jones - Stock up: The run defense was better, and he's the man in the middle of the defensive line. I did not see him stand out much, but the overall play was better than last week, so stock up.
Malcolm Roach - Stock up: Roach had a sack, and the unit played better in Week 2.
Eyioma Uwazurike - Stock up: Enyi got the start on Sunday, if you care about that, and played in 46% of the defensive snaps vs. the Jaguars. He's a key starter/rotational player for the Broncos' defensive line.
Sai'vion Jones - Stock up: He was active over rookie Tyler Onyedim and played 10% of the snaps on Sunday. I am going with stock up due to him helping to force a TFL late. This is the first time I noticed him make an impact play, so we are going with stock up.
Tyler Onyedim - Unchanged: Inactive and likely having a rookie redshirt year.
Jordan Jackson - Unchanged: Inactive depth player.
Edge RushersNik Bonitto - Stock slightly down: Bonitto had a strip sack called back early in the game due to an iffy defensive holding call on Riley Moss, but outside of that, his impact wasn't what I expected. We're through 2 games, and he has 0 sacks. He has been applying pressure, but he's paid to get those sacks and is viewed as a 12+ sack guy. So, I am going slightly down, but simply because I want to see him get after the quarterback more.
Jonah Elliss - Stock up: He played better in Week 2 and played 69% of the defensive snaps. Elliss got after Jags QB Trevor Lawrence on a third down, forced an incompletion, and applied pressure throughout. It wasn't a great game, but an improvement from what we saw on Monday Night.
Que Robinson - Stock up: I think he's the future starter at edge rusher and picked up another sack on Sunday. He has the size, speed, athleticism, and talent to be a disruptive pass rusher off the edge, and we're seeing that early on this season. I think he'll surpass Elliss as the season moves on.
Dondrea Tillman - Unchanged: Played 31% of the snaps and is a rotational edge for the Broncos. He's behind Jonah and Que, but does provide some much-needed depth at the position.
LinebackersAlex Singleton - Stock up: Singleton is who he is and has been during his entire time with the Broncos. However, he and the entire defense played better on Sunday, so stock up.
Justin Strnad - Stock up: I didn't notice him a ton on Sunday, but the unit played better, and the defense held the Jags under 100 yards rushing, and their tight ends didn't make many plays, so stock up for Strnad.
Jordan Turner - Unchanged: 0 snaps on defense but played 83% of the special teams snaps.
Karene Reid - Unchanged: 0 snaps on defense but played 52% of the snaps on special teams.
CornerbackPat Surtain II - Stock up: He's CB1 and locked down Brian Thomas Jr. for most of the game.
Riley Moss - Stock up: Moss had a great game and had a game-changing, momentum-flipping INT. It was a really good game by the Broncos' corner.
Ja'Quan McMillian - Unchanged: Parker Washington made some plays on Sunday, but J-Mac came up big late and had a near INT in the 4th quarter. I am going with unchanged simply due to Washington popping off again.
Jahdae Barron - Stock down: Barron played just 2 defensive snaps on Sunday and 43% of the special teams snaps. He didn't play much in Week 1, but I chalked it up to game script and a run-heavy Chiefs team. Can't do that this week, so this will be something to watch moving forward.
Kris Abrams-Draine - Unchanged: He's the 5th cornerback and played 0 defensive snaps but 57% of the special teams plays. He also makes me nervous when he's out returning punts.
SafetyTalanoa Hufanga - Unchanged: He was out there, but I did not see him make many big impact plays. The defense played well as a unit, so that's encouraging, but I didn't see anything too noteworthy from Hufanga. He did have that dumb delay-of-game penalty before halftime, but that probably didn't impact the outcome of that drive much.
Brandon Jones - Unchanged: I thought he made a few nice open-field tackles on Sunday, but like Hufanga, the Broncos safety had nothing super noteworthy overall.
Devon Key - Unchanged: Played 83% of the Broncos special teams snaps.
JL Skinner -Unchanged: Skinner saw 1 defensive snap on Sunday and played 65% of the special teams snaps.
Tycen Anderson - Unchanged: Played 65% of the Broncos special teams snaps.
Special TeamsWil Lutz - Unchanged: 2/2 on kicks and 2/2 on XPs
Jeremy Crawshaw - Unchanged: Had 3 punts and averaged 45 yards per boot, but didn't pin the Jags inside the 20 on Sunday.
Mitchell Fraboni - Unchanged: Played 7 snaps and snapped the ball well on all 7.
