Mike McCarthy expresses faith in DK Metcalf after poor start

The comments come after a frustrating opening two games for Metcalf, who has yet to find the explosive production Pittsburgh expected when it acquired him.
Metcalf has eight receptions for 67 yards through two games, averaging just 8.4 yards per catch without a touchdown. He caught four passes for 40 yards in the season-opening victory over the Atlanta Falcons before finishing with four catches for 27 yards on nine targets in Sunday's 20-3 loss to the New England Patriots.
The struggles have been particularly noticeable because of Metcalf's reputation as one of the NFL's premier big-play threats. In Week 1, he had opportunities to make explosive plays down the field but was unable to consistently capitalize Against New England, the issues continued. Metcalf was targeted nine times but averaged only 6.8 yards per reception, while the Steelers offense struggled to generate explosive plays as a whole. He also dropped two passes.
Still, McCarthy's confidence in Metcalf remains clear. Metcalf's track record suggests a turnaround remains possible. He has recorded three 1,000-yard seasons during his career and entered 2026 with 54 career receiving touchdowns.
For the Steelers, the priority is getting more out of an offense that managed just three points against New England. McCarthy acknowledged after the loss that the offense lacked execution and detail, taking responsibility for the unit's struggles.
