Giants' Cam Skattebo reflects on Jaxson Dart's injury, declares Jameis Winston will 'dominate'
Giants running back Cam Skattebo, as usual, is keeping his legs churning in spite of any obstacle.
In this case, the obstacle in question is the knee injury suffered by quarterback Jaxson Dart in Big Blue's loss on Monday night on the road against the Los Angeles Rams.
"It sucked to see," Skattebo said of Dart's injury, which requires surgery and is expected to keep him sidelined for the rest of the regular season. "He's my best friend, so it's a little emotional for me."
New York's trio of stars on offense - Dart, Skattebo, and Malik Nabers, who was also banged up in Los Angeles - have now all dealt with significant injury issues within the past couple of seasons.
"Malik and I got hurt last year, [Dart] gets hurt this year, it does suck, but the bright side is we have a long future ahead of us," Skattebo opined.
At the same time, Skattebo and the Giants know that they have no choice but to keep trudging onward, one week at a time.
"It sucks to lose him, but we have to move on. The team still has a full season left, 15 games minimum left, so it's something we have to battle through."
The Giants (1-1) host the Titans (0-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a showdown with former head coach Brian Daboll, who now serves as Tennessee's offensive coordinator.
When Dart went down on the team's opening drive, backup signal-caller Jameis Winston stepped in, but struggled mightily for the remainder of the game.
Regardless, Skattebo was vocal about his confidence in Winston to step up to the plate and make the most of the opportunity.
"We have Jameis' back," he said. "He's going to go out there and perform and dominate in-game. I'm fully behind that, I really do think that. We're bought in."
The running back called for the fanbase to join him in rallying around Winston at MetLife Stadium in Week 3 and beyond.
"I think the entire city of New York knows we still have a really great shot at this, and they love Jameis Winston," he declared.
"We're not going to take a step down, we're going to continue to push and work. Just like it was in Week 1, if our home fans give us everything they've got to support us, they'll get the same from us [on the field]."
Of course, Winston isn't the only member of the Giants offense who will see an expanded role as a result of Dart's injury. Skattebo knows that the team could be looking to give him more touches, particularly on the ground.
He's ready for the challenge.
"I get do to more," Skattebo stated. "If they need me to catch three more passes and run the ball five more times [each game], I'm going to be ready for it."
"I get stronger as the game goes on, because the way I play football, defenses don't want to deal with it for four whole quarters," he continued. "They get tired of tackling me, which I take pride in."
Finally, Skattebo spoke on how Dart's injury hasn't eliminated the QB's desire to stay involved from the sidelines.
"Jaxson is still going to be in here working his butt off, doing whatever he can," he concluded. "Meanwhile, I'm going to run the rock, be positive, and help us win some games."
