Giants' list of QB options to add includes Jimmy Garoppolo, Justin Fields, others: report
As the Giants get set to host the Tennessee Titans in a rainy, windy game at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon with Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback, they're also contemplating their next move under center with Jaxson Dart sidelined for the rest of the regular season.
"All options are open," said head coach John Harbaugh.
The list of quarterbacks that New York is interested in includes, free agent Jimmy Garoppolo, Arizona Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew, Minnesota Vikings reserve J.J. McCarthy, San Francisco 49ers backup Mac Jones and Kansas City Chiefs backup Justin Fields, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Earlier in the week, SNY NFL Insider Connor Hughesexplored some possibilities that Big Blue might take for a new signal-caller. His list also included Garoppolo, who last played for the Los Angeles Rams in 2024, and McCarthy, who has fallen on the depth chart in Minnesota lately.
Hughes mentioned that he thought it was unlikely a contending team would trade away their backup quarterback which would eliminate Jones as well as someone like the Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Flacco.
Whoever the Giants bring in will sit behind Winston to start. New York signed the 32-year-old to a two-year, $13 million extension before the beginning of the season and Harbaugh and OC Matt Nagy are "building the offense around" the veteran.
After a full week of practice, Winston will get his first shot as the Giants starter against the 0-2 Titans. Winston didn't play great after coming in for Dart on Monday against the Rams, going 11-for-27 for 111 yards with an interception in a 28-6 loss.
Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, has made 89 career starts and is 36-53. In two starts for the G-Men last season, he went 0-2.
It won't be easy for the veteran on Sunday as inclement weather is in the forecast which could mean both the Giants and Titans keep the ball on the ground for most of the match. As for Winston's backup, the Giants signed Jake Haener to the active roster ahead of the game.
