49ers took a step back' in first loss of season against Falcons
Losing is never great, but when you do lose, I think especially in this organization, it makes everybody really just look at yourself in the mirror," Kittle said. It's definitely going to sour our entire bye week, and I think that's good because I think when we get back next week, I think our guys are going to be incredibly focused.

Would I rather win? Absolutely. Way more fun. But hey, like I said, it could be worse. We didn't have a bunch of guys get injured today. I think we made it out pretty healthy. And we got guys coming back, so I'm excited about that."

49ers go a-stumbling into the bye (paywall)
The secondary was terrible, especially Ji'Ayir Brown and Jack Jones. Brown was late to everything. Jones didn't know his job, held on almost every play, and got benched for Ephesians Prysock. The 49ers played a bunch of Cover 3, and Atlanta was more than happy to eat up the underneath yardage.

But it was no Mike Evans eventually broke down the structure of the offense. So much was decided by every single choice route being wrong. Brock Purdy could not seem to get on the page with anyone, even Christian McCaffrey. Everyone broke in too early, or out too late, or kept going when he expected them to sit. In an offense predicated on timing and expectations, that can mean doom."

Kawakami: What needs fixing and what definitely doesn't as the 49ers hit the bye (paywall)
The 49ers cannily played the long-game this weekend by not pushing Mike Evans and Nick Bosa out there when they weren't 100% healthy; and they had Upton Stout in uniform only on an emergency basis - then suffered for it when Jack Jones got torched again and again.

But can you imagine if the 49ers played any of those guys, perhaps aggravated their nagging injuries, and still lost?

This game was on a short week on artificial turf after a long flight on a 10 a.m. body-clock start. They'll never say this, but the 49ers knew they could afford a loss on Sunday. And if the 49ers (who outgained the Falcons 400-295) didn't commit four turnovers, they still easily could've won this game, anyway."

Despite 49ers' hot start, changes loom at kicker, CB, WR and perhaps D-line (paywall)
Some of the names being bandied about - Josh Sweat, Khalil Mack, Daron Payne and DeForest Buckner - would be strong additions, and Buckner certainly would fit the homecoming theme the 49ers have struck all year with one-time players like Samuel and Dre Greenlaw.

Heading into the weekend, multiple reports said the Indianapolis Colts would hold off on a fire sale to see whether they could reverse their freefall in coming weeks. On Sunday, they lost to the Minnesota Vikings 16-10, dropping their record to 2-5.

Buckner, a 2016 first-round pick of the 49ers, is in the final year of his contract and is still beloved by the San Francisco fan base, the front office and those who played alongside him. He currently has four sacks, which would lead the 49ers."

49ers' depleted WR corps contributes to Brock Purdy's forgettable day: That's a real thing' (paywall)
The beat-up wideout corps meant Purdy was operating with a stripped-down game plan devised by Shanahan and offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak."

3 Winners and 11 Losers from the 49ers' loss to the Falcons
I didn't watch Week 7 thinking, Purdy cost the 49ers the game."

There was an objectively bad decision on an interception that should've ended up in the 10th row. If you've ever played quarterback, it's one you've probably thrown because you thought you had more space along the sideline than you actually did - and probably because you waited too long to decide who to throw the ball to.

Purdy had dropback on the drive before where he scrambled, and it felt like he was in the pocket for 10 seconds. He bought enough time for his tight end and picked up a first down on what would've been third and long.

On another play, Colton McKivitz was beaten cleanly off the line of scrimmage, which would result in a sack for 90% of quarterbacks. Purdy danced around the pocket just long enough before shoveling the ball to Jordan James, who ran for a first down-another second-and-long turned into a first down.

The second interception is one you tip your cap to the Atlanta Falcons on a design that has gotten the best of Purdy throughout the years.

Purdy finished in the top five this week among quarterbacks in success rate. His throws to Jordan Watkins, especially the one in the end zone, were on the money-the end-zone one is about as good a throw as you can make.

He made a few different throws that were contested that his pass catchers did not haul in. They are the same throws we've taken for granted because Evans has caught them all year."
