Lee Berger, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Witwatersrand, discusses the significance of finding what may be the bones of a new species of ancient human relative in Johannesburg. His team have named the creature Homo naledi. But other experts on human origins say the bones look similar to those of early Homo erectus, a forerunner of modern humans who wandered southern Africa 1.5m years ago
