Dr Richard Leakey has been immersed in paleoanthropology for over 50 years. From 1968 to 1999 he built up Kenya's National Museums, and led an international research effort studying human evolution within the Turkana Basin in northern Kenya.

Speaking to the Guardian's Rowan Slaney, he tells us what continues to surprise him about hominids and explains the technology that could revolutionise the study of our ancestry. In turn we asked: how certain can we be that humans originated in East Africa?
