Twitter has replaced its long-standing stars and "favorites" with hearts and "likes" in an effort to, "make Twitter easier and more rewarding to use."

In a post on the official Twitter blog, product manage Akarshan Kumar says, "we know that at times the star could be confusing, especially to newcomers. You might like a lot of things, but not everything can be your favorite."

The change also applies to Vine, and began with Twitter's streaming broadcast tool Periscope where they users have "embraced hearts in a big way."
