When the film The Babadook came out in 2014 I watched it, lights out, dark room, and felt the lick of terror roll up the back of my neck. It’s a remarkable accomplishment for both the director, Jennifer Kent, and the leading actress, Essie Davis, neither of whom I’d heard of before. The monster is Mister Babadook, and he comes to life when the single mother in the film reads a large pop-up book, whose artwork would not be out of place in a German Expressionist film like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, to her son. The boy pulls it off his shelf and asks her to read it. She asks him where he got it, and he replies, “On the shelf.†And then Mr. Babadook shows up and we get some classic horror cinema at its finest.Much like everyone’s first thought upon seeing the Evil Dead—I want that book!—or Hellraiser—I want one of those boxes!—lots of us thought “I want that Babadook book!†The book is central to the film’s plot and in a Rolling Stone article director Kent explains the unique role the book played in the creation of the film:“… illustrator Alex Juhasz’s designs for Mister Babadook, the sinister pop-up book that plants the first seed in the young boy’s imagination, also played a major role in the look of the film: Rather than design the movie and commission a prop to match, Kent modeled the film on the sharp edges and small imperfections of Juhasz’s work. ‘The book felt handmade and raw, and that’s how I wanted the energy of the film to feel,’ she says. ‘We created that world as much as possible first, and the production design then had to mirror that’.â€https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKa5Eeb9QdAThe director and the book’s designer decided to try a crowd-funded experiment to see if people just thought they wanted it, or if they really wanted it. I purchased my copy on November 24, 2014, for $80—the selling price during the crowd-funded campaign. The director wrote to the purchasers of the first 2,000 books:“To all our incredible fans (and especially to you, the first 2000 owners of our special edition Mister Babadook book …)“Thank you for being such solid supporters of this book and of the film. We are thrilled that The Babadook has received so much love and support from around the world. I never thought when we were shooting this film that so many people would see it, let alone give us the opportunity to put this special book into print. This is all happening because of the support from each and every one of you, and I will never forget that.“I have written some more story pages for this special edition, and I’m going to be working with Alex Juhasz (our brilliant illustrator) over the coming months to create some very beautiful pop ups to go with that extra bit of Babadook story. You will be owning pages not even seen in the film. It is special for Alex and I to now be able to create this ‘stand alone book,’ and I believe it is going to be a very special book to own.“In order to show my appreciation for your support, I have made a decision to sign each and every book that is sold in our campaign. So not only will your copies be numbered, they will also be signed. Thanks again to you all.â€And then they went to work.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe3RU4lsF90In an article in The Creators Project we learn more about what was required to create a product from a film prop:“Since its premiere at Sundance in January 2014, the film’s fans quickly rallied for the production of the pop-up book seen on screen. ‘We didn’t know how the film would do,’ says illustrator Alexander Juhasz. ‘So when I made the book for the film, we were joking about how if it became a big hit, people might want the book in their home.’ … requests to get the book made—bordering on demands—were heard loud and clear. …“Once it came time to prepare the limited edition book for production, the team brought on paper engineer Simon Arizpe. Juhasz had to recreate all of the original artwork and reverse engineer much of what was made for the film. ‘We had to rethink a lot of stuff for the design and format to work. In the film, the book ends abruptly, so we had to add some content. But we wanted to keep the integrity of the original—all of images that are in the movie are in the book, except maybe for one, I think,’ explains Juhasz. Arizpe adds: ‘Between the three of us, we figured out what we wanted each page to do. Alex gave me his art and I would mess around with it to make it move.’ Once the prototype was completed, it was sent off to the printing house, where the paper is die cut, then folded and glued by hand.â€The print run was just 6,000 copies (only the first 2,000 are numbered and signed) and they sold quickly. It took two years for the purchasers to receive the book—it just arrived at the end of this October. It’s hard to imagine anyone not being thrilled with the enormous pop-up book that not only exactly replicates the main prop in the film, but goes further with the story. The easiest place for you to obtain Mister Babadook is on eBay, where copies are selling for between $300 and $600. You might get lucky and snag an unsigned copy for just over $200 if you keep your eye on things. If your means are more modest, and you want to include watching the film in your purchase, you can buy it at amazon.com in a deluxe edition Blu-ray with a single pop-up inside the front cover.Whatever your choice, I would strongly suggest that you do not read the book aloud. If you foolishly ignore my advice, don’t look up at the ceiling, because Mister Babadook is keeping his eye on you.

Fox News reports that Donald Trump's still thinking of offering Mitt Romney the job of Secretary of State. The catch: Trump wants a public apology.A transition official told Fox’s Ed Henry that some in Trump’s inner circle want the former Massachusetts governor to apologize in order to be seriously considered for the secretary of State.Trump is reportedly considering whether to pick Romney or former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani for the coveted cabinet position.Giuliani is the preferred choice of Trump’s loyalists and grassroots supporters, while Romney is a favorite of establishment conservatives. Here's Romney, before lining up behind the new power: “Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. He gets a free trip to the White House and all we get is this lousy hat ... There is a dark irony in his boasts of his sexual exploits during the Vietnam War, while at the same time, John McCain — who he has mocked — was imprisoned and tortured.â€

Before the deregulation bonanza of the 1980s, corporations were expected to use debt and the public markets as the capital of last resort: they would pay "normal" dividends, then use the left over money to increase pay and fund expansion; but after the birth of "shareholder management," companies have acted like homeowners before the financial crisis: borrowing heavily to pay investors, at the expense of expansion and wages -- but unlike homeowners, corporate management gets to duck the bill when it comes due. Encyclopaedia Brittanica explains: "As a community moves toward despotism, respect is restricted to fewer people. A community is low on a respect scale if common courtesy is withheld from people on the basis of their political attitudes; rude to others because wealth or position gives them that right; or because they don't like a man's race or religion."The use of the "not equal" sign, ≠, as a stand in for the swastika, is just perfectly on-the-nose. These days, we benefit from having a plethora of TV streaming options, but SelectTV had never been on my radar. SelectTV may be a less known option, but it actually offers significantly more content than the usual suspects. For that reason alone, I thought it was definitely worth checking out. As advertised, SelectTV delivers a massive library of TV shows, movies, live channels, and more—over 300,000 + TV episodes and 200,000 movies, to be exact. I appreciate that fact that it’s all available through the same interface, which means no more switching between windows or having to enter different passwords to watch what I want. What's especially unique is that SelectTV also includes a Pay Per View service, which isn't usually an option with streaming services. This comes in handy for watching big fights and new movie releases. Plus, SelectTV connects to home TVs via Chromecast or an HDMI cable. If you love entertainment variety and enjoy not paying cable companies an arm and a leg, you owe it to yourself to check out this service. In fact, for a limited time, you’ll also get a free HD antenna from SelectTV post-purchase if you buy a one year ($24) or three year ($49) subscription.

Finished in brass and 14-karat gold, it has already been subject to many reviews. No matter which branch I try, it's 'WRONG!' My brother and father can hang it up just fine, but when my mother and I try, it's just 'WRONG! WRONG! The Denver Guardian looked enough like a real news site to convince legions of Facebookers that its fake news about Hillary Clinton was worth sharing. The anonymous creator reused an old handle in an early posting there, though, allowing NPR to track him down to the LA suburbs. Jestin Coler, 40, weasels at first, claiming it's all an attempt to "highlight the extremism" and show "how easily fake news spreads." But he's soon boasting of a business operation that brings in five figures a month from ads.Coler's company, Disinfomedia, owns many faux news sites — he won't say how many. But he says his is one of the biggest fake-news businesses out there, which makes him a sort of godfather of the industry. At any given time, Coler says, he has between 20 and 25 writers. And it was one of them who wrote the story in the Denver Guardian that an FBI agent who leaked Clinton emails was killed. Coler says that over 10 days the site got 1.6 million views. He says stories like this work because they fit into existing right-wing conspiracy theories."The people wanted to hear this," he says. "So all it took was to write that story. Everything about it was fictional: the town, the people, the sheriff, the FBI guy. And then ... our social media guys kind of go out and do a little dropping it throughout Trump groups and Trump forums and boy it spread like wildfire."As with other fake news hucksters, Coler says he also targeted liberals and lefties too, but found that they didn't fall for it the way others do. He is a registered Democrat. Now the election's over and Google and Facebook are done with fake news, he's thinking of getting out of the business—but insists that there are now so many ad tech options that alternative revenue sources are easily found.

Who needs fake news when we have this week’s tabloids to tell us what they think is happening in the private lives of celebrities, based on appearances alone?TV news doyen Barbara Walters “has three months to live,†claims the ‘Globe,’ based on a photograph snapped of her on a New York street wearing no makeup - a look that frankly makes many of us appear to have just weeks to live, especially first thing in the morning after a heavy night out.She has reportedly not appeared in public for months, “triggering fears the legendary TV news-gal is battling fatal Alzheimer’s disease.†Since when was not being pictured by paparazzi considered a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s?Tom Cruise “may be taking medication for an unknown illness,†reports the ‘Globe,’ based on a recent photo that seems to show his face looking slightly plumper than usual. Sure, he could have gained weight, and still looks 20 years younger than his 54 years, but the ‘Globe’ ropes in a tame doctor - who has not treated the actor - to say: “This bloated look could likely be the result of a medical issue that he’s dealing with.†Likely? Seriously? Trust the ‘Globe’ to suspect a mystery illness, when most wild speculation would focus on cosmetic fillers, or Cruise simply enjoying an extra burger with fries between filming movies.Brad Pitt is also hiding a “mystery illness†claims the ‘National Examiner,’ which reports that the actor was photographed entering the offices of a top infectious disease specialist in Beverly Hills, California. Of course, it’s perfectly natural for an actor preparing to film in exotic climes to have vaccinations against various tropical diseases, but for the ‘Examiner it’s a sure sign that Pitt has some dread illness. For good measure, the ‘Examiner’ claims that actor Liam Neeson is looking a little thin these days, and thus diagnoses him as “dying of a broken heart,†still mourning the loss of wife Natasha Richardson in 2009. Because that’s the sort of decisive psychiatric diagnosis that the ‘Examiner’ crack team of medically-trained journalists is qualified to make.O.J. Simpson, serving time in a Nevada jail on kidnapping charges, is “doing time in diapers,†claims the ‘National Enquirer,’ based solely on a jailhouse letter from a fellow inmate, which seems like an unimpeachable source of accuracy. Making the story even more ludicrous, the ‘Enquirer’ shows a photo of Simpson in his prison jumpsuit, wearing a giant man-size diaper . . . on top of his clothes. You have to search the corner of the photo for the small print confessing “Photo Re-creation,†which still fails to explain why an ‘Enquirer’ photo editor thinks anyone would wear an adult incontinence diaper above of clothing, instead of underneath. The ‘Enquirer’ continues its dogged hounding of actor Robert J Wagner for allegedly killing wife Natalie Wood, and confronted him “with the truth,†bluntly asking him: “Did you kill Natalie?†Wagner, to his credit, did not assault the reporter, who gleefully reports: “He doesn’t deny killing her!†Because being speechless with indignation is the same as an admission of guilt, in the wonderful world of the tabloids. In more important geo-political news, the ‘Enquirer’ reports that Kim Kardashian has had “secret butt reduction surgery,†while sister Khloe Kardashian’s derriere has grown to such proportions that “friends feared her titanic tush will explode!†This is based on the incontrovertible evidence of photographs which appear to show Kim’s rear-end looking smaller and Khloe’s appearing larger than usual. Because that’s all the evidence “friends" need to diagnose a case of posterior explosivitis. I am not making this up.The late Whitney Houston’s family is terrified that deceased daughter Bobbi Kristina’s former lover Nick Gordon will “cash in on a secret trove of videos and photos exposing the dead mother-daughter duo’s “drug-fueled misery,†claims the ‘Enquirer. Do such film and photos even exist? “Nick lived with Whitney and Bobbi Kristina for 10 years,†explains an unnamed insider. “Can you imagine how many photos he’s taken and the video footage he has of them passed out on drugs?†Well, the ‘Enquirer’ can certainly imagine, which evidently is good enough for them in the absence of a single fact.As I predicted months ago, the ‘Globe’ now claims that Kate Middleton has suffered a miscarriage and lost the twin girls she was expecting. It was an inevitable story, since the ‘Globe’ repeatedly reported that the Duchess of Cambridge was pregnant with twin girls despite all evidence to the contrary, and rather than admit their error, it was inevitable that eventually the mag would claim she had a miscarriage.Fortunately we have the investigative team at ‘Us’ magazine to tell us that Gisele Bundchen wore it best, TV host Garcelle Beauvais (Who she, Ed?) carries Purell, Slim Jims and an asthma inhaler in her leather Coach cross-body bag, and that the stars are just like us: they play table-tennis, jog with headphones, and check their phones. Thrilling revelations, as usual.Kourtney Kardashian is giving Scott Disick “another chance†at love, according to the ‘Us’ cover, because there’s nothing more important than a Kardashian’s love life, and Kanye West’s mental breakdown came too late for the tabloids to go into a feeding frenzy this week.Trust the ‘Examiner’ to bring us the biggest celebrity news of the week: that famously elusive American star Bigfoot “is back, in a big way,’ claims the mag, which claims he has been spotted recently - “as far away as Indonesia.†How Bigfoot managed to get past the NSA and fly undetected to Indonesia is not explained, but the world is filled with mysteries, as well as mystery illnesses, it seems.Onwards and downwards . . .

Alex Halderman has clarified his earlier remarks about the integrity of the Wisconsin election: in a nutshell: voting machine security sucks, hackers played an unprecedented role in this election; there are statistical irregularities in the votes recorded on software-based touchscreen machines and the votes registered with paper ballots counted by optical scanners, so why the hell wouldn't we check into this? Lethebo Rabalago, pastor of the Mount Zion General Assembly (MZGA), in Limpopo, South Africa, sprays his congregants with Doom Super Multi Insect Killer to heal them of various ailments. From CNN:A post from Saturday (on Rabalago's Facebook page) was captioned as if quoting a congregant, saying: "I came here with a pain on my back and stomach. Now, after the prophet sprayed me with Doom I am healed. My nose was blocked since last week, but after the prophet sprayed me with Doom I feel coming out of my nose. I thank God for healing me."When reached by phone, Rabalago declined to answer CNN's questions about his use of bug spray and hung up. MZGA could not be reached for comment, but in an interview with South African TV channel eNCA Rabalago said that God had told him to use Doom, and that he had healed countless people using it.Tiger Brands, makers of Doom, issued a statement that the practice is "extremely concerning" and "that it is unsafe to spray Doom Super Multi Insect killer or any other aerosol spray for that matter, into people's faces."

The Twisty Glass Blunt is an intriguing product that claims to abolish the need to ever buy or use rolling papers. How does it work? I had to see for myself.Built with a German-engineered glass tube and inner corkscrew, the Twisty Blunt is designed to give you the smoothest hits you’ve ever taken—and it look pretty good, too. Its designed with Infini-Cherry technology, which means you only have to light up once rather than between every pull. All you have to do to get started is pack the chamber, twist the screw, and light up. When you’re done smoking, twist the screw out and the ash leaves the glass, with barely any clean-up involved. Once you try it, I promise you'll never want to roll one up again. And since the Twisty Glass Blunt is so compact and comes with a microfiber bag, you can take it with you wherever you go. For a limited time, the Twisty Glass Blunt is on sale for just $44.99.
