Muslim ban promise mysteriously vanishes from Trump's website; GOP regulars in line for top posts
If your "best-hope" scenario is that Trump just said random trash to get elected and now has no idea what to do and will just let the GOP run the country while he pipes up occasionally with more random trash—things are looking rosy for you today. (more…)

Make America Grit Again: poor towns tearing up roads they can't afford to maintain
Aarian Marshall reports that poor towns are ripping up pothole-ridden roads rather than pay to maintain them.Repaving roads is expensive, so Montpelier instead used its diminishing public works budget to take a step back in time and un-pave the road. Workers hauled out a machine called a “reclaimer” and pulverized the damaged asphalt and smoothed out the road’s exterior. They filled the space between Vermont’s cruddy soil and hardier dirt and gravel up top with a “geotextile”, a hardy fabric that helps with erosion, stability and drainage. In an era of dismal infrastructure spending, where the American Society of Civil Engineers gives the country’s roads a D grade, rural areas all over the country are embracing this kind of strategic retreat. It's also true that some rural towns paved unnecessarily and bizarrely. When I lived in the southwest, I'd sometimes run into grids of perfectly black country roads gridding through the empty flat llano, like something put into Sim City before you even get started on what buildings you zone for. Oil money. Which is to say this sounds like an infrastructure problem, but in many cases it's just coming to terms with the reality of life in the country: "most of the community leaders interviewed by the report’s authors said their residents approved of de-paving, especially if agencies kept them informed about the process."Photo: Deborah Fitchett (CC-BY-2.0)
Russia reveals that it "was in contact" with Trump's campaign during race
New that Trump's elected, those to whom debts are owed can start fucking with him. Took it all of a day for one to get started!Russia said it was in contact with President-elect Donald Trump’s team during the U.S. election campaign, despite repeated denials by the Republican candidate’s advisers that any links existed. “There were contacts” before the election, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Thursday, according to the Interfax news service. “We continue this work of course,” he said, without giving details of what the contacts were.Bonus points to Ryabkov for the ostentatious ambiguity. It's like something from a 1970s Hollywood movie about a secret technology that makes Americans scared of radio waves in the 650nm range: “We continue this work of course.” In The Guardian, a "pro-Kremlin political analyst" quoted as saying "maybe we helped a bit with WikiLeaks" is getting a lot of play, too. This fits the pre-election suspicions of U.S. intelligence, but that job title means he's just a blogger/pundit type.

Man who flew hot dog to his hot tub faces fine, but isn't this just an ad?
The Australian man who sent a drone to pick up a hot dog, then return it to him in his backyard hot tub, is in trouble with the law.The BBC reports that the aerial meat journey breached local drone flight safety rules."Tim," as he is anonymously known, reports that the hot dog was "freezing" anyway by the time it got to him. There's something a bit fishy about it. It's all sourced to "YouTube video", but the BBC heavily edited and rehosted the video and doesn't link to either YouTube or the original story at The Age. It doesn't even name it, instead calling it "local media". Go looking for it, and the only thing on YouTube seems to be a ripped and reuploaded version of a professionally-produced ad for a hot dog shop that isn't on YouTube.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dHQxNCIYUEThere's an interesting ethical question for you: if something viral is newsworthy (Man Fined Over Hot Tub Hot Dog), but not newsworthy enough to do any real work reporting out whether it's a marketing stunt or not, how clever can you be in removing non-newsworthy elements that might be The Marketing Part? After all, you might get it wrong. You know, like that thing where I carefully avoid using the word "GoPro" when posting that "GoPro footage of Badgers Skydiving" video, but fail to notice that all the badgers are wearing North Face.

Kano - a Raspberry Pi computer kit now has a screen
My daughter and I have been having fun with the latest Kano computer and coding kit, which comes with a screen. It's powered by a Raspberry Pi, a small Linux computer, and was created to allow kids to make games, music, and art through coding. The operating system is already installed and comes with a bunch of fun applications and games, like Scratch and Minecraft. It has built in wifi and a Chromium web browser, and the small orange wireless keyboard has a touch pad. It plays YouTube videos and you could probably get away with using it as an everyday computer. To "build" the Kano, you follow the simple, well designed instructions to snap pieces together. The manual describes the function of each component as you go along. Once you put it together, plug it in and you'll be taken on a candy-colored tour of Kano-land, where you can create an avatar and sign up for an account on Kano, so you can complete quests (like customizing a Pong game with a Scratch-like program called Kano blocks), and share and download your creations. There's a game called Terminal Quest that teaches Linux commands as "spells" to make things happen.Check out Kano's Make Art website to give you an idea of what Kano's coding environment is like. The Screen Kit is a 10" LDC 1280 x 800 display that's crisp and bright. You don't need the screen to use a Kano. If you want you can buy the basic Kano kit and plug it into any HD display. The overall design of the hardware, software, and printed documentation is terrific.

Custom orthodontic retainer to give better blowjobs
Former dentist Kuang-Yi Ku created a prototype orthodontic retainer designed to improve the fellatio experience for the wearer's partner. After practicing dentistry for six years, Ku is now a student at Design Academy in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. His Fellatio Modification Project is a speculative design effort featured in the Science Gallery London's new exhibit Mouthy: Into the Orifice. The prosthetic consists of a custom orthodontic retainer with the top "embossed" with soft denture base material to create nubs on the roof of the mouth. From New Scientist:Science doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to incorporating human sexuality into research and practice. Dentistry, for example, considers three functions for the oral cavity: aesthetics, pronunciation and mastication. “There is another function, sex, which is never mentioned in the textbooks,” says Ku. “I’m from the gay community and I realised that the medical school is a very patriarchal system, very serious, and the professors are very traditional, particularly in Asian countries. So I wanted to approach that relationship.”Instead of treating disease and restoring normal function to the mouth, Ku imagines dentists enhancing it along one particular line, the act of performing fellatio. To do this, he created retainers which offer a more intense sexual experience for your (male) partner."Sex and dentistry: I made a fellatio prosthetic for my mouth" (New Scientist)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jf9Pt-0vYOA
Crazy expensive watch with a flip clock display
A co-branded product from watchmaker Jacob & Co and luxury design retailer Colette, the SF24 features a tiny flip clock like the electromechanical split flap displays popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s before LEDs and LCDs became all the rage. I'd like it more if they dispensed with the analog dial entirely. Then again, it sells for $90,000 so I'm clearly not their target customer. Jacob & Co X colette 'SF24' Watch (via Uncrate)

The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye – But just who is this great Singaporean comic artist?
The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye is one of the most intricate and impressive graphic novels I’ve ever read. It’s a biography of the great Singaporean comic artist Charlie Chan Hock Chye, and traces the evolution of Chan’s career by showing the wide array of artistic styles he experimented with. These range from Marvel-style superhero comics to celebrity caricatures, cartoonish science fiction, manga, noir, and more. All this is complemented by explanations and annotations of Chan’s work, which are also presented in graphic form. The work is complex not only in style, but also in content. A driving theme throughout Chan’s career has been uncompromising political satire. Thus the survey of Chan’s work is also a dense and dizzying tour of 20th-century Singaporean history. The comics depict the complex Singaporean identity following independence from Britain, as the tiny nation-state struggled to define itself ethnically, politically, and economically. While this is a weighty topic, there’s an ever-present humor in Chan’s comics. For instance, his superhero parody is called Roachman. Roachman worked as a human waste collector in Singapore’s pre-plumbing period, and gained his powers from the bite of a cockroach. His transformation into a superhero allows for commentary on the social ills of the day, as well as providing a snapshot of a country just before rapid urbanization and development. The big conceit in all this is that Chan isn’t real. He’s a fictional character invented by Sonny Liew to take readers through a simultaneous history of Singapore and of 20th-century comics. One lasting impression from this book is that it must have been so fun to create: inventing not only an artist, but also his works, and the additional meta-layer of being a faux biographer/art historian. Only someone with an enduring love of comics could have produced this work. The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Pantheon Graphic NovelsPantheon 2016, 320 pages, 7 x 1.2 x 10.4 inches (hardcover)$18 Buy a copy on AmazonSee sample pages from this book at Wink.

Primitive Technology: shrimp trap
Primitive Technology is a YouTube video channel produced by an Australian guy who goes into the jungle with nothing but the clothes on his back, and makes things like shelters, tools, and weapons. There are no words or text in the video, only the sounds of nature for a soundtrack. In this episode, he weaves a trap to catch shrimp, which he puts in an earthenware jug, and then cooks them over a fire he starts with friction.Shrimp (and fish) traps are simple traps designed to catch aquatic life due to their shape. It consists of a simple basket with a funnel shaped entrance. Shrimp easily find their way into the trap as they are funneled in, but have difficulty finding the way out.I wove the main body of the trap from lawyer cane then made the funnel from sticks with vines woven between them. The funnel was then inserted in the top of the basket and was complete.I put the trap in the water under some tree roots without any bait. About 10 minutes later caught the first shrimp which I stored in a pot of water. I caught another one and made a fire.I humanely killed the shrimp using the splitting method which destroys the central nervous system (boiling alive is more painful). Then I put them back in the pot with water. I collected some yams that I planted years ago from wild stock and put them in too. I took 5 hot rocks from the fire and put them in the pot boiling the contents. The shrimps turned red after cooking. They were peeled and eaten. The yams were also peeled and eaten. This method of catching shrimp is easy with the only skill needed being basketry. In practice, a long stretch of creek might have several traps collecting food each day without any effort on the part of the fisherman. Bait is not necessary to catch shrimp as they will be naturally be drawn to the fish trap out of curiosity. But scraps from previous shrimp may be used to bring in new ones (they are cannibalistic) or other fish like eels. The shrimp trap is easy to build and can be reused many times.

Crash test: Nissan sold in Mexico vs. Nissan sold in USA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85OysZ_4lp0&feature=youtu.beSafety standards matter. The cheapest Nissan sold in Mexico, the Tsuru, and the cheapest Nissan sold in the USA, the Versa, were driven into one another at 40 miles per hour. You don't want to be in either car, but you definitely don't want to be in the Tsuru.A car-to-car test between a 2015 Nissan Tsuru, the least expensive sedan sold by Nissan in Mexico, and a 2016 Nissan Versa, the least expensive sedan sold by Nissan in the United States. With a 50% overlap and each vehicle travelling at 40 mph (64 km/h) the test highlights the significant differences in safety standards between these two baseline models sold by the same manufacturer in different markets.Wired reports that the Tsuru (basically a 1990s Sentra) is being put to pasture soon, and that Mexico is toughening its car safety laws.
On Star Trek and the radical feminism of believing women
In this great essay, lawyer and writer Mirah Curzer examines the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Remember Me” from a feminist lens. The episode centers on Dr. Beverly Crusher, who begins to notice that people are disappearing and she's the only one who can remember that they ever existed. Curzer writes:What surprised me the most about the episode was how long it took for anyone to question Beverly's reliability. She says someone is missing, but no one remembers him coming onto the ship, and they can’t find any record of him ever being born. And yet they mobilize all resources to find him and the other missing people only Beverly remembers. They sideline their mission and change course more than once based on her unconfirmed claim that something is wrong. It is only 20 minutes into the episode that Picard gently and hesitantly suggests that maybe the problem could be her memory. And even after Picard has asked Beverly to see the counselor because he thinks she may be having memory issues, he still trusts her. She asks him to turn the ship around even though she has no evidence to present but her own memory—which is contradicted by everyone else’s memory as well as all the physical evidence. And still, he responds:“Your word has always been good enough for me.”You can read the full essay over on Medium.

Refurbished Kindle Voyage E-reader for $120
