McAdoo: No part of Giants' 'disappointing' offense was functional
The New York Giants put up a mere three points in their season opener Sunday night, losing to the rival Dallas Cowboys 19-3.The offense in particular was sorely lacking without star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in the lineup. The team posted just 35 rushing yards and had just 56 offensive plays, while their defense was on the field for 74 snaps. It was a forgettable performance for a team that loaded up on offensive weapons in the offseason."The offense was very disappointing," head coach Ben McAdoo said after the game, according to James Kratch of NJ.com."We need to go back and take a look at the film. I know no part of the offense was functional tonight."Entering the season, the offensive line was an area of concern. On Sunday, its running backs could only manage 2.9 yards per carry and quarterback Eli Manning had trouble finding open receivers."You can't just point the finger at one person or one position when you have an outing like that," McAdoo said.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Elliott relieved to 'finally get a fair trial' in suspension case
Running back Ezekiel Elliott was happy and relieved to be back with the Dallas Cowboys after leading them to a 19-3 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday night.Elliott's six-game suspension was placed on hold by a U.S. District Court judge Friday after it was ruled that the running back did not receive a fundamentally fair trial during his appeal process. The All-Pro running back was sanctioned Aug. 11 for a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy following a league investigation into allegations he'd committed domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend.Elliott, who was never charged or arrested, spoke candidly Sunday for the first time since June."Just relieved from the fact that I finally get a fair trial," Elliott said, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "I finally get a chance to prove my innocence. And I'm just happy I'm able to be with these guys for as long as it's permitted and just not having to miss time and not being away from them."Elliott expressed dismay that his name was being "dragged through the mud" and said being with his teammates had helped him stay focused on football."It just feels good to be out here," Elliott said. "It's definitely been a tough last 14 months, and at times, it's gotten so hard you start to lose faith. But just being able to come in and be with these boys every day has kept me focused and made me not give up. I keep going."Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Jerry Jones says hold on Elliott's suspension inspired Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones basked in his team's 19-3 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday night, and was particularly invigorated by Ezekiel Elliott's return after his six-game suspension was placed on hold by a U.S. District Court Judge.Elliott was available to play against New York after Judge Amos Mazzant III ruled that the running back didn't receive a fundamentally fair trial during his appeal process.Jones said he knew Elliott's return would give the Cowboys a psychological boost."I know that I felt when we did get that decision it was going to be an inspiration to the team," Jones said, via Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News.Elliott rushed for 104 yards on 24 carries, adding five receptions for 36 yards as the Cowboys disposed of the Giants with relative ease.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cowboys' Scandrick fractures hand, expects to miss 1-2 weeks
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick fractured his left hand during Sunday night's win over the New York Giants, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News.Jones added that he thinks Scandrick should be able to play with the injury while wearing a cast. An update from the veteran defensive back himself, however, indicated that he'll first require a brief absence.Scandrick told Jean-Jacques Taylor of NBC Dallas that he's having surgery on Monday, and expects to miss one-to-two weeks of action. The Cowboys travel to face the Denver Broncos next Sunday, with another road trip the following week against the Arizona Cardinals.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Disaster vs. Cowboys shows Giants should pay Beckham whatever he wants
"I believe that I will be, hopefully not just the highest-paid receiver in the league, but the highest paid, period." - Odell Beckham Jr., Uninterrupted The New York Giants receiver made headlines this offseason for commenting that he wants to be the highest-paid player in the league once his contract is up following the 2018 season.A receiver has never been the league's highest-paid player since the salary cap era began in 1994, but anybody who watched the Giants' embarrassing loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday without Beckham would likely agree that the former LSU star deserves it.An ankle injury kept the 24-year-old on the sidelines, and the rest of the Giants offense should have stayed off the field with him, because they would have had roughly the same impact on the contest. The beleaguered unit only put three points on the board and totaled just 230 yards. Quarterback Eli Manning's numbers were almost as poor as last time Beckham missed a regular season game, a 2015 contest against the Minnesota Vikings.Stat2015 vs. Vikings2017 vs. CowboysPassing Yards234210Completion %51.773TD10INT31Rating50.777Ben McAdoo is often credited with fixing Manning's problems, showing up after a terrible 2013 season and resurrecting the two-time Super Bowl champion's career in 2014. The Giants front office believed so much in the 40-year-old that they gave him the head coaching job in 2016 despite the fact he had no experience in the position at either the collegiate or professional level. They could have saved that money and just tacked it on to Beckham's upcoming contract, because it's the electric wideout who has saved Manning's career, not McAdoo.Since Beckham arrived, Manning has put up the three of the four highest passing-yard totals of his career, while throwing for 91 touchdowns against 44 interceptions. The jump in Manning's numbers from 2013 to 2014 when Beckham arrived is staggering.Stat2013 (Before Beckham)2014 (After Beckham)Completion %57.563.1Yards/Game238275TD1830INT2714Rating69.492.1If the Giants have any hope this season, Beckham needs to be on the field terrorizing opposing defenses. Cohen, Golladay among breakout stars from Week 1
Sunday provided football fans with the full slate of games they were sorely missing over the summer, and to no surprise, Week 1 introduced a number of potential breakout stars.Without further ado, here are five players who made a name for themselves during their season openers.Tarik Cohen, RB, BearsJordan Howard may have finished second in rushing yards last season, but it was rookie Tarik Cohen who operated as the engine of the Bears' offense Sunday.Cohen led Chicago in rushing and receiving, running for 66 yards on five carries while catching eight passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. The speedster could carve out a larger role in the offense as the season progresses, and it's clear the fourth-round pick will be pushing Howard for lead-back status. Although the Bears lost in heartbreaking fashion, they have no reason to hang their heads, in large part due to Cohen's exciting debut.Kenny Golladay, WR, LionsGolladay earned excellent reviews during the preseason and made a strong introduction to the professional game during Sunday's victory over the Cardinals. The 23-year-old caught four passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns, fueling the Lions' second-half surge. After the game, Golladay - a third-round pick who could end up being one of the steals of the 2017 draft - earned high praise from Golden Tate, and the two receivers figure to be the central components of the Lions' offense this season.Cooper Kupp, WR, RamsKupp is another rookie receiver who stole the show on Sunday, leading the Rams with four catches for 76 yards and a touchdown in a 46-9 rout of the Colts. Some believed Kupp would eventually become the best receiver from his class, and he wasted no time proving that he's ready for the professional ranks. The Rams looked like an entirely different team than last year's forgettable iteration, and Kupp was a major reason why.Austin Hooper, TE, FalconsHooper was held to just two catches, but made them count, scoring on an 88-yard touchdown while leading the Falcons with 128 receiving yards in a 23-17 win over the Bears. Atlanta led the NFL in scoring with 33.8 points per game last season and could be even more potent if Hooper develops into a consistent contributor. The young tight end got his feet wet during his rookie season, and now looks ready to flummox defenders who are worried about Julio Jones, Mohamed Sanu, and the rest of the Falcons' numerous weapons. On Sunday, Hooper made the Bears pay for their inattention.Jesse James, TE, SteelersLike Hooper, James is often the forgotten man in a star-studded offense, and picked the Browns apart when called upon in a 21-18 victory. The third-year tight end caught six passes for 41 yards and two touchdowns, giving the Steelers another capable weapon in the red zone. During an afternoon when Le'Veon Bell and Martavis Bryant were clearly working themselves back into top form, James picked up the slack, forming a strong tandem alongside Antonio Brown. Jason Witten sets Cowboys record for career receiving yards
Jason Witten's incredible resume added another feat on Sunday as the veteran tight end broke the Dallas Cowboys career receiving-yards record during the second quarter of the season-opening contest versus the New York Giants.Witten entered his 15th season with the Cowboys just 17 yards shy of Michael Irvin's record, and passed the Hall of Fame receiver's mark of 11,904 with his second catch of Sunday's game. The 35-year-old, who already passed Irvin for career receptions with the franchise five years ago, is now just over 3,200 yards shy of Tony Gonzalez's mark for the most receptions by a tight end in league history.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jaguars' Robinson suffers ACL injury, team reportedly fears tear

If the initial diagnosis is accurate, it's a huge loss for the club. The former Penn State standout suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Jags' win over the Houston Texans, and it definitely put a damper on the club's first season-opening win since 2011.Robinson led the team in virtually every receiving category last season, including receptions, yards, and touchdowns.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. 5 offseason myths dispelled in Week 1
After a seven-month offseason spent dissecting free-agent additions and draft picks, it's easy to confidently predict how teams will look and perform, but until they kick off, no one actually knows. An opening-night shocker from the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots sent out a sharp reminder that even the top experts don't know what's going to happen on game day. Here are five myths that were built up over the offseason and crumbled before the end of Week 1.Myth: Bengals' offense is stocked with firepowerInstead of reinforcing the offensive line, Cincinnati opted to beef up its weapons, expecting to become a wide-open, fast-paced scoring machine.Despite the addition of Joe Mixon as well as a healthy A.J. Green and Tyler Eifert, the Bengals could not muster a point in their 20-0 loss to the division-rival Ravens. A lack of protection played a major role in Andy Dalton's inability to throw the ball to his own team as the seventh-year quarterback notched four interceptions and a lost fumble, the most turnovers he's ever committed in a single game.Green was the only one to put up a respectable scoreline with 74 yards on five catches. Meanwhile, Mixon grabbed 9 yards on eight carries and first-rounder John Ross was out with injury. Getting excited about the Bengals' firepower may have been jumping the gun.Myth: Browns still can't compete with good teamsAfter a 1-15 season a year ago, the Browns made plenty of roster improvements this offseason, but they couldn't have gotten that much better, right? And they'd gone 4-30 against the defending division champion Steelers since 2001. So there's no way Cleveland could compete with Pittsburgh, right? Especially not with the third-youngest Week 1 starting quarterback ever.Wrong. Dead wrong. DeShone Kizer, 22, showed no fear in the face of the Steelers' defense, completing 20-of-30 passes for 222 yards with one touchdown and one interception as Pittsburgh barely edged the Browns 21-18. That's Pittsburgh, a team many picked as top-three material this season and a Super Bowl contender with the likes of Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown leading the offense.Brown definitively balled out for the Steelers, accounting for 182 of their 263 passing yards, including a game-sealing catch in triple coverage. But few teams have a playmaker like AB, so if that's what it takes to stop the Browns, Cleveland should have plenty more than one win in 2017.Myth: Marshawn Lynch won't be the same after year of retirementMost human beings would not be able to take a year away from sports, return at age 31, and play as physically as Lynch typically has throughout his career. But there's only one Beast Mode.Despite his year away from the game and the abundance of injuries he suffered before his initial retirement, Lynch looked as good as anyone could expect. He ran for 76 yards on 18 carries along with 16 yards receiving, leading the game in rushing and having a great time doing it.Myth: NFL defenses know the book on Carson WentzWentz began the 2016 season as one of the best quarterbacks in football through three weeks. After a Week 4 bye, though, he began declining into a mediocre-to-poor performer, routinely attempting the same throws to the same receivers. However, Wentz came out on fire in his second season. While the Eagles added receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, the former second overall pick used some familiar targets Sunday to suggest he's more than a three-game wonder. Wentz passed for 307 yards, completing 26-of-39 passes for two touchdowns and relying on 2016 teammates for most of his production.ReceiverCatchesYardsTDsZach Ertz8930Nelson Agholor6861Darren Sproles5430*Alshon Jeffery3380*Torrey Smith1300Brent Celek1110Wendell Smallwood150*LeGarrette Blount111*Player wasn't on 2016 Eagles rosterMyth: Jaguars can't win with Blake BortlesHow could the Jaguars possibly beat the league's top 2016 defense with a quarterback who can't help but turn the ball over?Run the ball and play defense, apparently.Despite sticking with Bortles as their starter, the Jaguars easily handled the Texans, who returned J.J. Watt to the field after missing 13 games in 2016 but lost 29-7. Bortles only needed to complete 11-of-21 passes for 125 yards with one touchdown as the Jaguars' defense absolutely dominated the Texans, notching 10 sacks, three forced fumbles, and an interception. Quarterback play is overrated.(Photos courtesy: Action Images)Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Jared Goff might actually be a good quarterback
The hiring of 31-year-old Sean McVay as Los Angeles Rams head coach in the offseason essentially came down to the fact he made Kirk Cousins a prolific passer with the Washington Redskins.Hoping to replicate that success with former No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff, the Rams took a chance on the boy wonder coach, and through one game it looks like a damn good decision.Goff didn't just look competent Sunday as the Rams throttled the hapless Indianapolis Colts, he looked downright dominant in running the offense. The former Cal standout threw for 306 yards with a sparkling 72.4 completion percentage.Comparing those numbers to last season's stats make Goff look like Tom Brady.Stat2016vs. ColtsComp. %54.672.4Yards per game155306Yards per completion5.310.6Rating63.6117.9TD51INT70One of the main areas of noticeable improvement was Goff's ability to throw the ball down the field. Beckham inactive vs. Cowboys with ankle injury
The New York Giants will try and win their first game of the season without their best player.Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is inactive for Sunday night's matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, the team announced. Beckham was nursing an ankle injury he suffered during the preseason and was listed as a game-time decision. His absence shifts the advantage to the Cowboys even further, especially after it was recently ruled that running back Ezekiel Elliott could suit up for Dallas.Beckham was a key contributor in New York's two victories over the Cowboys last season, totaling eight catches for 167 yards and a touchdown.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. T.J. Watt is the missing piece of Pittsburgh's championship puzzle
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been a hallmark of consistency over the past decade, perennially among the league's best teams under the guidance of head coach Mike Tomlin and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. But while the franchise smoothly bridged two generations of talent, it's still existed in the shadow of the New England Patriots, whose ongoing wave of dominance continues to linger like an ominous cloud.Pittsburgh's progress is defined by how it stacks up to New England, and the team is still reeling from its 36-17 AFC Championship Game loss to the eventual Super Bowl champs in January. It became apparent on Sunday, however, that the Steelers have added the missing piece to topple the Patriots by selecting a player from one of football's first families in T.J. Watt.Watt was one of the two best players on the field in Pittsburgh's 21-18 victory over the Cleveland Browns, along with all-world wide receiver Antonio Brown. In his professional debut, Watt racked up a team-high seven tackles, two sacks, and an interception, becoming one of three players to record two sacks and a pick in their debut.Although most rookies would be thrilled with an opening performance like Watt's, the first-round pick didn't sound remotely satisfied."We felt like we were in the backfield all of the time, but we have to finish plays," Watt told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "We had a few sacks left on the table, from my point of view."It was the smallest of sample sizes, but it does seem baffling that Watt was available with the 30th overall pick in this summer's draft. Would it be all that shocking if his career replicates that of his older brother, J.J., who's one of two players to win Defensive Player of the Year three times?Watt's starring performance begets further hope for the Steelers at the best possible time. The vaunted Patriots, preordained by many to win their third Super Bowl in four years this season, were dreadful in Thursday's opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. At 40, Tom Brady finally looked his age, while seldom appearing comfortable in the pocket. Watt will certainly complicate matters if New England and Pittsburgh face off again in this winter's playoffs. The Steelers already boast a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Roethlisberger, arguably the NFL's best receiver and running back in Brown and Le'Veon Bell, respectively, and a defense that's quickly gelling into a top unit. And while it's still early, the fact that Watt wreaked havoc against a sneaky-good Browns offensive line illustrated that Pittsburgh has the final piece it needs to topple the Patriots en route to Super Bowl LII.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. "Clearly, it was a bad day."Though Watson briefly injected some energy into the Texans' attack, Houston's quarterback duo combined for just 19 completions and 164 passing yards.O'Brien had better figure it out quick, as Houston travels to Cincinnati to face the Bengals on Thursday night.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. "I messed up my finger a little bit, but other than that my body felt fine. Just busted the bone through the skin. Nothing bad, just tape it up."Watt continued playing through the injury, recording one tackle. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year labeled his own performance "terrible" after the Texans failed to quell Blake Bortles and Co. on Sunday.Watt's performance was likely impacted by his injury but it seems he won't be having any of it, as the Texans look to recuperate in Week 2.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Colts turn to Brissett in 4th quarter after Tolzien's horrific display
Following a terrible three quarters that saw Scott Tolzien throw two pick-6s, the Indianapolis Colts have turned to newly acquired Jacoby Brissett at quarterback for the final frame against the Los Angeles Rams.Tolzien got the start after Andrew Luck was ruled out due to injury earlier in the week, and immediately struggled against the physical Rams defense. The veteran backup's first pass of the game was intercepted by Trumaine Johnson and returned for a touchdown, putting the Colts at an early 10-0 disadvantage. It wouldn't get any better in the second half, as Tolzien would be victimized by another pick-6, this time by Lamarcus Joyner, to see the Rams take a 37-3 lead.Chuck Pagano then decided to turn to Brissett, who was obtained via trade from the New England Patriots last week. Watt on his performance: 'Terrible, no other way to put it'
The Houston Texans were beaten handily by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, something that didn't sit well with J.J. Watt."Terrible, no other way to put it," Watt told Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. "I need to play a lot better football and obviously we all need to play a lot better football."Houston head coach Bill O'Brien pulled quarterback Tom Savage in favor of rookie Deshaun Watson, after Savage struggled mightily in the first half. Savage went 7-of-13 for only 62 yards, while being sacked six times.Watson seemed to spark the offense somewhat, but he was only able to produce one touchdown pass and seven total points. The Texans seem to be constantly searching for a quarterback that can help the offense complement a solid defense led by Watt. Thanks to the Chargers joining the Rams in Los Angeles, the City of Angels has gone from zero NFL teams to two in the span of two seasons. One of the major concerns with the city housing two teams was a lack of fan interest, and that appears to be accurate given the Rams' attendance at Sunday's opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
Pryor takes blame for Week 1 loss: 'I'm real pissed at myself'
Terrelle Pryor's debut as the Washington Redskins' feature receiver didn't quite go to plan.Although he did lead Washington with six receptions for 66 yards, Pryor's stats were overshadowed by multiple dropped passes, for which he took responsibility following the 30-17 loss to the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles."I'm real pissed at myself. I put this one on me," Pryor said, according to Mike Jones of The Washington Post. After hauling in 77 passes for 1,007 yards last season with the Cleveland Browns, Pryor joined Washington on a one-year, $8 million deal. With DeSean Jackson gone to Tampa Bay, Pryor's expected to be Kirk Cousins' No. 1 target, and he certainly was on Sunday.
49ers' Reuben Foster carted off with leg injury vs. Panthers
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster was carted off the field Sunday against the Carolina Panthers with an apparent leg injury.Foster went down in the first quarter and immediately grabbed his leg. The 49ers announced his return was questionable, but he did return to the sideline shortly after, per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. The 49ers drafted Foster in the first round in 2017 and were expecting big things from the rookie. Fellow linebacker NaVorro Bowman has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, so Foster was going to be an impact player for the 49ers as well as provide the team insurance at the position.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Julio Jones ties Boldin for fastest to reach 500 receptions
By his standards, a four-reception, 66-yard performance is a quiet output, but Atlanta Falcons All-Pro receiver Julio Jones still managed to make some history in the process.Jones hauled in the 500th catch of his career Sunday versus the Chicago Bears, in just his 80th game, tying the recently retired Anquan Boldin as the only wideouts in NFL history to achieve the feat so quickly, according to Maghen Moore of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. The four-time Pro Bowler is in his seventh season, and it won't be surprising if he manages to set a few more records along the way.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc.
