looorg writes:Tokyo is Getting an E-Sports Gym:An E-sports gym is opening in Tokyo. They'll have computers, tutors (as a replacement for personal trainers?) and pros on staff to teach you how to play the games.I guess calling it a gym now instead of an "Internet cafe" is the next logical step after it became E-sports instead of just "playing computer games". Will the tutors yell at you like some kind of drill sergeant? L2P NOOB![Ed. Note: "esports GYM" is what is displayed in the window and on their monitors; reporting variously presents it as "E-Sports Gym", "Esports Gym", and "Esports gym". For the etymologists in our midst, see gym and gymnasium.]Original SubmissionRead more of this story at SoylentNews.
canopic jug writes:Deutsche Welle (DW) is reporting on a historical reenactment, of sorts, on a large scale. Since 1997 the Guédelon castle about 10km from the village of Treigny, France has been in the process of being built using exclusively methods and materials like those used in the Middle Ages. Stones are quarried, shaped, and laid by hand. Nails wrought in smithies on site, along with all metal tools. Paints are mixed from traditional materials, and so on. Even after almost 25 years of progress, the completion of the 13 century style castle is still a long ways off and estimated to be in 2030.

Beryllium Sphere (r) writes:The UK did a large study of household transmission, large enough to include a statistically respectable number of breakthrough cases among vaccinated people. The vaccinated people who never got infected of course didn't pass along an infection. Of those who had been vaccinated but still got infected, the chance of passing it along to a household member dropped by 38-49%.https://www.gov.uk/government/news/one-dose-of-covid-19-vaccine-can-cut-household-transmission-by-up-to-halfTake the reduction in infections into account, and the estimate is that vaccinations cut the effective reproductive number by a factor of 6. The virus cannot afford that. Even in the early days in Wuhan with no precautions it was only 3-3.5.We're still waiting for the results of the prospective study on college campuses but this strikes me as enough data to encourage vaccines to protect the unvaccinated.I'm eager to see how the nasal spray vaccines turn out. Medicine is horribly unpredictable but it's reasonable to think that something stimulating the mucosal immune subsystem could be even more effective, maybe even much more.Original SubmissionRead more of this story at SoylentNews.
