Microsoft wants $15 for its Windows 10 DVD player
The Windows 10 upgrade may be free, but it removes Windows Media Center from PCs with the add-on installed. Users with Windows Media Center enjoyed DVD playback without the need for third-party software before Microsoft killed it off. HTC posts loss in Q2, will cut jobs and phone models
Times are tough for HTC. The Taiwanese phone maker has announced (PDF) its Q2 2015 financial results with a loss of NT$5.1 billion ($157 million) on revenues of NT$33 billion ($1.04 billion).This drop is a considerable one from the year-ago quarter (PDF), in which the company posted a profit of NT$2.3 billion ($87 million) on NT$65.1 billion ($2.12 billion) in revenues. Basemark and Crytek are building a VR benchmark of their own
Crytek recently added Oculus Rift support to Cryengine 3, and now the developer is working with Basemark to create a VR headset benchmark. OS X privilege escalation exploit makes for silent-killer malware
A zero-day vulnerability in OS X Yosemite has been exploited in the wild, and it's a doozy. According to Malwarebytes, a script that exploits the vulnerability can give a user root privileges without the need for a password prompt, which then allows malware running under that user's account to do untold harm to a vulnerable Mac.OS X (as well as other *nix operating systems) maintains a list of users who can access root privileges, called sudoers. Spoofed Win10 update emails carry nasty ransomware
Microsoft is rolling out its free Windows 10 upgrade in phases, which means that some of those who are signed up to receive the new OS have to wait (your author included). It's only human nature that waiting breeds impatience, and some diabolically clever malware makers are taking advantage of the situation. According to a new threat analysis by Cisco, a new crop of scam emails masquerading as a Windows 10 upgrade notification is making the rounds, with an attached "Windows 10 installer" zip file that's actually a variant of the CTB-Locker cryptographic ransomware.As is usually the case with these types of scams, the email itself contains a variety of malformed characters, questionable grammar, and amateurish-looking assurances that the message has passed a threat scan. AMD's Exascale Heterogenous Processor is the server APU
AMD revealed plans to release an APU for servers during its Financial Analyst Day presentation back in May, and we now have a better picture of what that processor might look like. Nokia sells Here maps to auto consortium for $3.06 billion
It doesn't seem like too long ago that Nokia went all-in with Windows Phone and differentiated itself with its Here map service. Since then, not only has the company sold its Devices and Services divion to Microsoft (which Redmond later restructured), but now the former mobile phone giant has also sold off the Here service . Mozilla CEO Chris Beard has written an angry open letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella regarding a change to Windows 10's default application settings. 14 million have upgraded to Windows 10 in its first 24 hours
As we found out when we got together and recorded our latest podcast last night, Scott is the only member of the TR staff that's using Windows 10 so far, but at least he's not alone. Microsoft says 14 million people have upgraded to Windows 10 in the new operating system's first 24 hours of general release. Nvidia recalls Shield Tablet due to battery fire risk
Some Nvidia Shield Tablets built between July 2014 and July 2015 could pose a fire risk. The batteries in the affected tablets can apparently overheat to dangerous levels. As a result, the company has issued a recall notice. The recall applies only to tablets that show a battery model of Y01 on the About Tablet screen in the Settings application.If you own a Shield Tablet, Nvidia recommends that you make sure it's running the latest software update. Wake-from-sleep vulnerability leaves UEFIs open to attack
Most modern motherboards support firmware write protection to prevent unwanted BIOS flashes, but a vulnerability in many UEFI firmware implementations could accidentally disable such protection. A new warning posted by Carnegie Mellon University's CERT says that when many x86-based systems wake from sleep, they fail to enable that write protection .The security hole opens when an affected system goes to sleep and then wakes up. Many Intel-based x86 systems use a specific flag stored in a BIOS register that controls write protection. Samsung Q2 earnings fall, mobile device sales disappoint
Samsung Electronics has released its Q2 2015 financial report. Sales were down approximately 8% from the year-ago quarter, totalling 48.54 trillion Korean won ($41.3 billion). Operating profit was down 5% compared to Q2 2015, at 6.90 trillion KRW ($5.8 billion) for the quarter.Samsung's smartphone sales declined, with the IT & Mobile division's sales down 10% to 26.06 trillion KRW ($22 billion), contributing 2.76 trillion KRW ($2.2 billion) in profit. The profits represent a drop of more than 37% from a year ago. Q2 sales and profits were down for the second straight year. IDC: Worldwide tablet market continues to decline
Do we officially live in a post-tablet world yet? IDC reports that tablet sales worldwide declined for the third straight quarter, continuing a trend that started at the end of 2014.
