Gears of War 4 wants to be a first-class PC citizen
If you follow PC gaming at all, you probably heard that Gears of War Ultimate Edition launched on PC behaving much the same as the Xbox One version. PC Gamer's Tom Marks sat down with Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition last week, and he reports that the upcoming title avoids the console-port pitfalls of its predecessor. ...Read more...

GlobalFoundries skips the 10-nm node on the way to 7-nm FinFETs
GlobalFoundries recently announced it would be adding a 12-nm node to its FD-SOI roadmap, and it's now announcing a more mainstream node for high-performance silicon: 7-nm FinFET. That move follows reports that the company would make exactly this move last month. Surprisingly, GloFo says it'll achieve this shrink using optical lithography alongside "EUV (extreme ultraviolet lithography) compatibility at key levels." The move to 7-nm transistors is claimed to offer 30% higher performance and two times more logic density compared to GlobalFoundries' 14-nm FinFET process. The company also expects to re-use much of its existing 14-nm infrastructure to produce 7-nm parts at its Fab 8 campus in New York. Even with that re-use, GlobalFoundries will still ...Read more...

Poll: How do you feel about your PC's noise levels?
In our component testing, we put a lot of emphasis not only on how fast a given graphics card can run, for example, but also how quiet it is in the process. We like CPU coolers that balance high performance with low noise and cases that keep parts cool without contributing lots of decibels to a system's sound pressure levels. Furthermore, we're sticklers about the quality of the noise those parts produce—coolers and fans that make a broad-spectrum sound win higher marks from us than those that make whiny or growly noises. While we're quite particular about these characteristics of PC components, we're curious how many of the system builders and PC gamers that read TR feel the same way. At least one of our writers, who shall remain nameless, thinks the rest of us are crazy for caring so much about system noise and feels ...Read more...

CryEngine will add DX12 multi-GPU and Vulkan in future versions

That document shows DX12 multi-GPU and Vulkan support as "on target" for upcoming releases.Chinese-exclusive martial arts MOBA King of Wushu was the first DirectX 12-enabled CryEngine title when it debuted earlier this year, but CryEngine still doesn't support multi-GPU systems in DX12 mode. Samsung gelds Note 7 battery capacity to limit fire risk
If you've recently spent any time online, you've almost certainly heard about all the fireworks surrounding Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 handsets and the company's related product recall. At least for its South Korean customers, Samsung has stoked its forge and crafted a software fix to limit the battery capacity of existing Note 7s to 60%. That move might reduce the likelihood of the phones spontaneously combusting, but it seems more likely to annoy stubborn users into exchanging their devices for new phones without the fire risk.According to the Associated Press, the fix was advertised in a South Korean newspaper and will be rolled out on September 20. There's currently no word ...Read more...

ReCore gets Xbox Play Anywhere program off to a shaky start
ReCore, a combined effort from Armature Studio and Comcept, is the first title in Microsoft's new Xbox Play Anywhere initiative. While that program, which allows gamers to buy a title once and play it on both the Xbox One and the PC, is a welcome development, ReCore itself is apparently a bit of a misstep. Going by the opinions of several reviewers, it seems the game simply isn't that good. We haven't played the game ourselves, but we've read the reviews and picked out some of the juiciest tidbits for you.
HP purchases Samsung's printer business for a cool $1.05 billion
On Monday, HP Inc. made two major announcements for its commercial printing business. HP Inc., which comprises the former personal systems and printing businesses of Hewlett Packard, revealed that it would not only acquire Samsung's printer business for $1.05 billion, but also that it is releasing a new line of A3 (yes, the paper size) multi-function printers (or MFPs) that are meant to go head-to-head with purportedly less-versatile and more complicated A3 copiers from other manufacturers.Through the $1.05 billion deal with Samsung, HP will take on Samsung's portfolio of printers, its 6,500 printing patents, and a workforce of 1,300 researchers and engineers. With these assets, HP hopes to "disrupt and reinvent the $55 billion copier industry." HP thinks that customers have grown frustrated with the ...Read more...

Rumor: Microsoft to launch Surface all-in-one PC in late October
Expert Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley reports that Microsoft may launch a Surface-branded all-in-one device in October of this year, according to her sources. She suggests this Windows 10 computer has an internal codename of "Cardinal," and that it may be a consumer version of the massive (and massively popular) Surface Hub. Her sources tell her that "Cardinal" may be available with up to three screen sizes, ranging from 21 inches to 27 inches, and that it may be positioned as a product that can "turn your desk into a studio."To support the idea, Ms. Foley points out a patent for a modular all-in-one PC that Microsoft published early this year. The new PC will purportedly launch alongside a bevy of partners' devices at a Microsoft event in the last week of October. Ms. Foley posits a ...Read more...
Belkin RockStar dongle lets iPhone 7 owners charge and rock out
One question that it seems like every iPhone fan is asking in the wake of the iPhone 7 announcement is how they'll charge their next iDevice while listening to music at the same time. That's because Apple killed the 3.5-mm headphone jack on the iPhone 7, and wired audio now has to pass through a Lightning-connector-equipped pair of headphones or through a Lightning-to-3.5-mm dongle. There's obviously just one Lightning port on the iPhone 7, however, so the charging-and-listening-at-once problem is real. ...Read more...

All of the most successful gaming keyboards in the last few years have relied on mechanical keyswitches, usually from German manufacturer Cherry. GlobalFoundries adds a 12-nm node to its FD-SOI roadmap

Its upcoming Z170A Gaming M6 will integrate the ASMedia 2142 USB 3.1 controller, a new chip that MSI and ASMedia apparently worked together to create.
