Elon Musk is moving X and SpaceX to Texas

The Netflix app for Quest headsets is no more
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Netflix has discontinued its streaming app for Quest headsets, Upload VR reports. The good news for Quest owners is that Meta recently added support for Netflix in the Quest browser, complete with 1080p streaming.Netflix hadn't significantly updated its VR app since porting it to the Quest in 2019. It never gained passthrough or download support, and its resolution stayed pinned at 480p. None of that mattered when the app came out for Samsung Gear VR in 2015, but things have changed a lot in the nine years since then.I'd imagine some people will miss the cozy Netflix cabin in this YouTube Short, though.Streaming in the browser fixes two of those things - passthrough and higher-resolution streaming - but users still can't download... Twisters doesn’t mention climate change to avoid saying anything ‘message-oriented’
Image: Universal Though Universal's Twisters is set to drop as the US deals with a massive heatwave, wildfires, and the aftermath of multiple deadly storms, the movie goes out of its way to avoid mentioning climate change because its director didn't want to make audiences uncomfortable. It would have made sense if Twisters - a film about storm chasers studying a spate of unusually powerful and destructive tornadoes - worked climate change into its story. But in a recent interview with CNN, director Lee Isaac Chung said that, even though he thinks cinema should be a reflection of the world," he avoided mentioning climate change in Twisters because he doesn't feel like films are meant to be message-oriented."Chung pointed to the way that some of T... Five futures for Apple’s HomeScreenPod

Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance can’t pray away the demons in new trailer
Courtesy of Netflix (C) 2024 Though director Lee Daniels isn't exactly new to horror, the first trailer for Netflix's The Deliverance makes it seem like he's hitting his stride with the genre.Inspired by the 2011 reports of a haunting in Gary, Indiana, The Deliverance tells the story of Ebony Jackson (Andra Day), a woman from Pennsylvania whose life is upended as her sons Andre (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nate (Caleb McLaughlin) are tormented by a malevolent entity. While it's obvious that Ebony's at her wit's end as she brings in Reverend Bernice James (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) to exorcize her sons, it's also clear that others - like social worker Cynthia Henry (Mo'Nique) and churchgoer Alberta (Glenn Close) - aren't sure what to make of the mother's situation. RCS on the iPhone is almost the solution to our green-bubble nightmare
Illustration by William Joel / The Verge The photos aren't blurry! As a longtime iPhone user married to a longtime Android user, I've spent years sending and receiving photos that come through both postage-stamp small and about as sharp as a pointillist painting. But a few minutes after I installed the iOS 18 beta on my iPhone 15 Pro, I asked Anna to send me a photo, and what came through was the blissfully high-res photo I'd hoped for. That, right there, is what I call an upgrade.RCS support is just one of the new things coming in iOS 18, of course. At WWDC a few weeks ago, Apple talked a lot about homescreen customization, improvements to Siri, a revamped Photos app, and more. The company seems to have added support for RCS, a more modern and powerful messaging protocol that... Continue reading...

Apple is finally embracing Android’s chaos
Image: Apple For years, I've kept a pretty spare iOS homescreen. Two or three rows of icons on the top of the screen, sometimes arranged in such a way that the app icon colors complement each other, and three apps in the dock. Because of Apple's resistance to letting its users muck with the homescreen's look and feel, I haven't been able to make things quite as simple as I would like.I've looked at more customizable Android homescreens with jealousy. I've had an iPhone since the day the first one came out, and while Apple's smartphones have since become wildly more powerful, capable, and larger, the company has forced me to organize my apps starting from the top of the screen for 17 years.Sure, my homescreen usually looked nice. But I've wanted... Continue reading...

The Xreal Beam Pro has good ideas about AR — but not enough juice
Image: Xreal There are two possible paths for augmented reality devices. One path is the all-in-one approach, which you might call the smartphone path or the Vision Pro Path: you buy a full-fledged single device with everything you need, and when you need an upgrade, you buy a new one. The other path is the unbundled one: your AR system might be lots of devices rather than just one, and you'll upgrade and swap things in as you need them. That path is more like building a home theater system than buying a new iPhone. The Xreal Beam Pro, which I've been testing for the last couple of weeks, is a big bet on unbundling. The watchOS 11 beta slowed me down, in a good way
The Modular Ultra face now allows you to have bezels for your training load and vitals. One thing always irked me about the Apple Watch. Rain or shine, in sickness and in health, it pushed me to close my rings. Never mind if I had covid-19, shin splints, or was mentally in a dark place. It nudged me to be a better" version of myself, so long as better didn't involve a day off. But with watchOS 11 - the public beta of which arrives today - it feels like my Apple Watch is finally cutting me some slack. This is largely due to a trio of new features: the new Vitals app, Training Load feature, and the ability to pause your Activity Rings. I waxed lyrical about the latter right after WWDC, but after spending some time with the developer beta, I'm convinced these are the smartest fitness updates Apple's rolled out in years.T... And if you're looking for help with the iPadOS 18 beta, you're in the right place: the setup process is the same. You should understand what you're getting when you try a beta, though. For one, you won't get all of the new features at once; many of them will come down the road. Appeals court halts return of net neutrality
Cath Virginia / The Verge | Photos from Getty Images A federal appeals court has agreed to halt the reinstatement of net neutrality rules until August 5th, while the court considers whether more permanent action is justified. It's the latest setback in a long back and forth on net neutrality - the principle that internet service providers (ISPs) should not be able to block or throttle internet traffic in a discriminatory manner. The Federal Communications Commission has sought to achieve this by reclassifying ISPs under Title II of the Communications Act, which gives the agency greater regulatory oversight. The Democratic-led agency enacted net neutrality rules under the Obama administration, only for those rules to be repealed under former President Donald Trump's FCC. The current FCC,... Image: Apple Apple just launched a version of its HomePod Mini smart speaker in a new midnight" color. The dark color looks very similar to the original space gray that the Mini launched in, but the new naming brings it in line with the midnight HomePod second-gen that was released early last year. It goes up for sale on July 17th in the US (still for $99) and 31 other countries. The HomePod Mini only launched with two colors - space gray and white - initially, but Apple later added yellow, orange, and blue. This kind of writing, sometimes called a speaking complaint, is a far cry from the rote retelling you often find in lawsuits. That's not a surprise once you know that Hetal Doshi, lead of the nascent litigation program within the Antitrust Division, sees her job, in part, as that of a storyteller.Storytelling matters a lot in litigation,... Illustration: The Verge Google is considering spending $23 billion to buy Wiz, a cloud cybersecurity startup with partners that include Amazon and Oracle, reports The Wall Street Journal. At close to twice what it spent for Motorola Mobility in 2012, it would be the most Google has ever paid for another company. The New York City-based Wiz offers siloed security tools and scanners" for the enterprise space, according to the company. Wiz writes that it secures corporate cloud infrastructure by creating a normalizing layer between cloud environments," letting businesses rapidly identify and remove critical risks."
