2017 Compilation to date
Several images didn’t get uploaded. Should be complete now. I’m going to repost the old incentives (some may get re-done), and put up separate collections of memorial posts and Grampy’s wisdom.
2005 Compilation
Veterans’ Day 2017
A good Veterans’ Day to you all. Thought I’d share… My grandfather, Charles J Odendhal JR, was a Navy man and led an interesting career. He served aboard several ships, and became a Naval Aviator before WWII. This included being[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry...
Columbia’s Tats
Seeing how things are working so far. I’ll work on putting up the old content and I plan to start putting up new content shortly. Something I was goofing around with for a vote incentive a while back. But with[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry...
Starting Over
Hey! TMI isn’t dead. I’ve just been sick again. The good news is that I can almost breathe through my nose again. It appeared like my old provider might be coming back online at any moment, but I’m not getting[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry...

Indeed... I work in IT, and my car has a bumper sticker with that phrase on it. Cloud security is messy. Costs can be lower or higher depending. I work for a company that already has a large IT department, has several data centres, and some cloud projects have shown that we don't save money. If we had to put all of the infrastructure in place first then maybe. But moving a non startup to the cloud is not always a good idea.I don't think I trust WD though, not after the debacle in 2005 where I had to return three drives one after another.Having run both AMANDA and Bacula locally I don't mind running decent back up software (I also have experience with TSM and Netbackup)

That's what one of my co-workers says. We do tech support. John Dvorak had a real nasty column about storing stuff on someone else's cloudy computer back in 2011 or so. Not only did people's pictures disappear when the photo storing "cloud" place disappear, but the users found out that the "privacy" at another cloud storage place wasn't so good either, when pictures of some kids skinny-dipping got really, really popular.Nowadays you can buy a WD 4 TB drive for about $110 on sale. There's good freeware to automatically back up drives and folders.

Hmm, the invotive image isn't showing up either

@Guy Tanzer..."There is no cloud. It's just somebody else's computer."

The buck or two a month so you save by taking a free domain from your web host vs getting it from a major registrar separately is totally not worth the risk from having all your stuff in a single basket.

Sad to read about your Hosting problems, had been checking in every day but missed the last couple days :(Hope you get things sorted out soon, will continue checking in as often as can (and voting)
By: Gregory Brown
Sorry to hear your having problems Andy. If it will help I have been saveing all the pages from day one and i have them separated in to folders by years. So if you need any let me know and I can e-mail them to you.
By: NielsR
I appreciate you've got bigger problems, but just so you know: the comments on this post seem to be leaking into your rss feed. I use newsblur and they're all listed as if they were posts. Good luck!

I suggest PairNIC; they've been very good to me, and their customer service facility has always been very responsive.Eric Hines

I have a hard link to the voting site. Still voting every day. Hope you get up soon!
By: ai_vin
Well it's good you still have all the images but what about our witty comments? They are half the fun.
By: Foradain
Glad you're back! I hope they didn't lose anything critical; I presume you weren't their only client.Good luck setting up again, and I look forward to your next page!
By: EcchiKitty
Yikes. Figured was something of that general nature. Glad to hear nothing was truly lost.

You have my sympathies. I'm webmaster for the local chapter of a club. Our ISP went out of business and a claim jumper grabbed all the domain names for hostage. So, now our chapter is .info instead of .org but it took two weeks, even with everything backed up correctly.

well crap.

Ah, the "cloud". Gotta love it. I've been in IT as a student, teacher, or support tech for forty years as of last month, and I don't trust the "cloud" at all. "Here, buy a 2TB hard drive for your computer.... so you can store your data somewhere else".
By: Rypperdoc
Andy, Thank you for your hard work to satisfy your semi-loyal readers.
By: kStormGemini
Was thinking of putting something clever and witty here but realised I'm neither clever nor witty. So I'll settle for wishing you good luck on the mess and hope for the best.
By: frank

Wow... That.. kinda sucks. Glad you have all your images still, that makes it at least recoverable. Me and the rest of the readers will wait for you. Hope you have (or find) a good replacement host. ~That reader that never registered once the comments became Logged-In-Only (but kept reading because RSS wins).

For what it's worth, it didn't go down all at once. I noticed it when I tried accessing the site using my phone and got the redirection. But a few hours later was able to access it on my PC and Phone till just a day or two ago when it became unavailable again.
By: KindredWolf
Wow! Best wishes to you and yours. I eagerly await your restored works. They have been a blessing in escapism and dynamic plot developement... Truly a joy to follow. The naked chic are nice to look upon as well ;)

I meant to say, i jusr decided to {and did} two days before i read this.
WTF?!
So, the ISP hosting my website went down almost a week ago and they are unreachable and not communicating very well. Unfortunately, I’ve been neglecting making my own backups, trusting in theirs. I hadn’t allowed for the entire ISP going[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry...

Great trip. Internet was awful. Going to be flying home tomorrow. The 2GB upload limit, that I never fixed, won’t let me upload pics. I’ll inflict the slide show on you later… Cheers!
