The employment minister, Priti Patel, has struggled to explain how a post-Brexit government would spend money it currently contributes to the EU.
Remain campaigners accused Vote Leave of peddling "fantasy economics" after it claimed it would protect those, such as farmers and scientists, who are currently funded by the EU.
