Batten down the hatches Hamilton, it's about to get wet and windy.

A special weather statement issued by Environment Canada says potentially damaging southerly winds are expected to develop Wednesday afternoon in Hamilton and all of southern Ontario.

Winds gusting to 90 km/h are expected.

The weather agency says the gusty winds could be strong enough to toss loose objects and down tree branches, possibly resulting in power outages.

Strong winds and a 60 per cent chance of showers are expected Wednesday morning and into the afternoon as a cold front moves into the area, bringing with it a risk of thunderstorm overnight.

The damaging winds are expect to end overnight into Thursday.

More rain and thunderstorms are expected Thursday morning with additional rainfall amounts from 5 to 10 mm.
