Russell Hill told fellow campers that someone close to him had been killed in an accident while deer hunting, Victoria's supreme court has heard.
Gregory Stuart Lynn, 57, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Hill and Carol Clay at a remote camping spot in the state's alpine region on or about 20 March 2020.
