Search efforts have been scaled back for a missing four-year-old boy after he disappeared from his family's sheep station in the remote South Australian mid-north on Saturday afternoon, police say.

Assistant police commissioner Ian Parrott told a Friday afternoon press conference that the search for August Lamont, known as Gus, on the property near Yunta, about 300km north of Adelaide, had been scaled back.
