On October 5, 1970, a militant separatist group in Quebec kidnapped two public officials in Montreal, triggering what became known as the October Crisis. The Front du Liberation de Quebec galvanized the French working class and demanded social reforms. But when their tactics turned violent, Quebec had to choose between escalating the violence or finding a political solution.
