Taiwan is something of a "David" in its struggle to stay independent from "Goliath" that is mainland China. Support from the US has helped the island maintain that independence - though its commitments are "strategically ambiguous." Yesterday, the US president said he would be open to talking to Taiwan's president - which would be a major departure from the norms of that ambiguity.
