Singer-songwriter Helado Negro grew up in Florida, the son of Ecuadorian immigrants, and became well-known for his personal and political experimental pop songs. Fabi Reyna was born in Mexico, grew up in Texas and founded Reyna Tropical, the indie-Latin-rock band from LA, as well as the magazine dedicated to women and nonbinary guitarists. The two got into the studio intending to write one song together, but three days later they ended up with the nine songs from their debut album Helado Tropical." Reporter Gisele Regatao has this profile of the duo.
