Tech-companies are starting to fall in line with Trumps latest name change -- Lake Ontario is now Lake America, at least if you are in the USA. No change for the rest of the world. This follow the previous change of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, then also that mountain in Alaska that reverted back to Mount McKinley instead of being Denali.
The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" in the United States. Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see "Lake America," those in Canada will continue to see "Lake Ontario," and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names. These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now.
Google was first to cave. Referring to GNIS. Not sure why the rest of the world will see Lake America. Nobody outside the USA or the Trump circle will ever use it. Beyond as the source of a joke. Google was also first to cave in on the Gulf name change.
Apple have not updated the name change yet and has no comment. There it is still Lake Ontario.
Mapquest have stated that they will not change the name and are sticking with Lake Ontario. No matter what President Trump likes to call it.
So is this what they teach in US schools now in geography? Or doesn't nobody care what the mad king does ...
