The US' current political fault lines have colonial roots

The British Empire wasn't the only colonial power in what is now the United States. Several competing colonization projects led by the Spanish, Dutch, French and others laid the foundations of American history. Their distinct patterns of settlement help explain many of the political divides that continue to shape the US today, says historian Colin Woodard. He tells The World's Host Marco Werman that, over the centuries, these rival visions also influenced how American democracy evolved.
