[...] At first glance, eggshells seem fragile, but nature has designed their structure to absorb energy and spread stress. The team then asked themselves if this principle could be applied to spacecraft shielding.
There are aluminum egg-shaped shells, arranged in a grid, situated between two aluminum plates, each of the shells being fully filled with water and thus forming an intact protective arrangement. When this structure is hit, the egg-shaped shells in the array will not deform separately and scatter; rather, they will remain connected and deform in unison.
Throughout the deformation process, they will be crushed one after another, dissipating the impact force and preventing it from concentrating on a single point, thereby buffering the damage.
