My favorite pages from The Way Back Home – Places 11 to 20
I finally found some time to look back at the previous chapter, The Way Back Home and collect my 20 favorite pages from it. There were exactly 204 pages in the chapter, so this collection covers 10% of all published pages. This week, I'll post the pages placed between 11 and 20. Next week, I'll post my personal top 10. The design of the waitress turned out a bit too close to Viviana, but I love Viviana's reaction to her meal in the last two panels and had the same smile on my face as Ilias.
This page is in the top 20 for a single reason, the sign of the tavern. The Wet Bottle is a more than worthy successor of The Thirsty Unicorn. Maybe Powree and I should design bar signs for a living.
SPOILER: The first page of this scene is in the top 10. A reader correctly guessed that I had the idea for this scene after playing Long Live the Queen. Don't let the cute graphics fool you, you'll die often and gruesome in that game.
I think the whole encounter with Cassius Livy turned out very well and this is my favorite page from the scene. Many readers wondered why Cassius was laughing at the proposal of a contract in the last panel like that.
Viviana plays her role astonishingly well in this page. I wouldn't suspect a thing if I were in the shoes of the business owner. I particularly like Viviana's pose and facial expression in the third panel.
The spell effect in the first panel is the highlight of this page. Powree did an amazing job to merge the two planes of reality in a very dynamic way. The aerial view in the third panel also gives a nice view of the burned-down village of Oakdale.
That's a really amazing drawing of Viviana in the last panel. The deep red shirt suits her very well, and the rainbow knife has a particularly nice color gradient. In the first sketch, Viviana was holding the knife diagonally towards the camera, which made it look like she's threatening Ryker's father with it.
I really like Viviana's entrance in the last panel. Her greeting is based on a line in the Fincher movie Zodiac about the serial killer of the same name: "This is the Zodiac speaking." I also like the harmonious coloration of the page.
I love the look of Eldor's projection in the first panel. It gives the panel an interesting layout. Too bad the panel also required the inclusion of two rather large word bubbles. I spent quite some time on the three colored text boxes. Choosing the right color and transparency settings usually involves a lot of trial and error.
The burning building in the last panel looks fantastic. I was very happy when Powree surprised me with this detailed artwork.
