Former president of the International Council of Nurses who fought for nursing conditions worldwide
Kirsten Stallknecht, who has died aged 83, was a leader of nurses in Denmark, Europe and the world for more than 30 years. She was a formidable force in nursing and public life, not only in her native Denmark but as a trade unionist fighting for nurses' conditions internationally.
In 1967, Kirsten - not quite 30 - took over the presidency of the Danish Nurses' Organisation (DNO), a reputable but financially weak professional association; when she resigned in 1996, at the end of her seventh term, the organisation had become one of Europe's most respected nursing bodies.
