The former foster father of missing toddler William Tyrrell has been cleared of lying to a powerful law enforcement body despite incorrectly stating his wife had never harmed a child.

In Sydney's Downing Centre local court, magistrate John Arms said he was not convinced the man - who cannot be named for legal reasons - knowingly gave false evidence when called before the New South Wales Crime Commission as part of a joint investigation into William's disappearance.
