Australia's next chief of the defence force will be the first from the navy in more than two decades, with the announcement that current vice chief, V Adm David Johnston, will take on the role from July.
The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and the defence minister, Richard Marles, announced the appointment on Tuesday morning, also confirming that the current air force chief, Air Marshal Robert Chipman, would move up to become Johnston's vice chief.
