Loneliness is killing people. The World Health Organization reports more than 800,000 people die each year from causes linked to loneliness; social isolation has been shown to increase the risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes, among other illnesses. To try and tackle this problem, in 2018 the UK launched a national loneliness strategy, becoming the first nation to do so. The World's Host Carolyn Beeler speaks with Alex Smith, one of the architects of that strategy, for our new solutions series, The Loneliness Diagnosis.
