What we know and what we don’t know about accidents involving self-driving cars

Recent investigations into the safety of self-driving cars have revealed that the vehicles are getting into accidents-but so far it seems that all of those accidents are caused by humans driving the old school, "manual" way.

Earlier this month an advocacy group called Consumer Watchdog sent a letter (PDF) to Google demanding that the company release accident reports involving its autonomous vehicles. This weekend, the Associated Press reported that Google had notified the California DMV of three collisions involving the self-driving cars since September, when California law began requiring that operators of autonomous vehicles report such incidents.

Still, the AP was unable to get any further details on the collisions due to privacy restrictions placed on accident reports submitted to the California DMV.
