I'm always usually behind on stupid legal developments for various reasons including the huge amount of stupid source material. But I've been further behind than usual lately because I am redesigning the site (yes, again) and preparing to move it to a different server. That process has been ... fun, but I think is nearly over. So, first, this is to let you know the news, which I'm sure you will find hugely exciting, that the new site should be up within the next week or so.
The new site will feature the same ridiculous content but also will have lots of fancy crap like pull-down menus, a search box, polls (always on critical issues of great public interest), easy access to older posts (randomly selected or otherwise), more pictures, and various other things at which I think you will enjoy pointing your eyeballs.
In the meantime, here are a few of the stories that I am of course following but may or may not be able to write up in detail during the next few days:
- Earlier this month a guy in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle mask (Leonardo) stole a motorcycle from a car dealership in Melbourne. He left behind a van he had stolen, but any trade-in value it had was minimized when he set the van on fire. So that happened.
- Another officer-involved killing, this time in Kansas, where officers fired 18 rounds into a fleeing suspect. The fatal bullet probably lodged in its oil filter, because they were shooting at a farm combine. (The human who stole it was not injured.) The local sheriff said no action would be taken against the officers, who he deemed "justified in disabling the farm implement."
- Ninth Circuit holds the Batmobile is entitled to copyright protection. DC Comics v. Towle, No. 13-55484 (9th Cir. Sept. 23, 2015) ("Holy copyright law, Batman!").
- Should you yell "Dick!" while coaching a team of nine-year-olds in a public gymnasium? Nope. Does the First Amendment protect your right to do that without being arrested and charged with a crime? Yep. (Bonus points: the swearer's last name is "Curs.")
- Speaking of which, a transgender woman says that she was subjected to a 40-minute pat down by TSA agents at Orlando, after our intrepid heroes were baffled by an "anomaly" that showed up on the scanner. You can probably guess what the anomaly was, because you have a brain, but they apparently could not. And shouldn't the scanners be limited to picking up anomalies that pose security risks? Trust me, it's nearly impossible to take over a plane with one of those.
