My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: For a long time, a concert by Cecile de Sars in Midgard played a pivotal role in The Way Back Home. But I ultimately rewrote that part of the story so that the whole action takes place in and around Greendew's castle.

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: At the time, I wasn’t aware that the name Arathor originally comes from the Lord of the Rings. I only knew the name from my parents who played a character with that name in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign.

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Some people are critical of such long sections with background information about the setting of a comic. But it would have been almost impossible to include that much basic information in normal dialog. For example, all inhabitants of Gaia know who Arathor is and […]

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Lilith wasn’t able to cast the correct protection shields against Eldor’s spells fast enough. But Eldor’s spells didn’t have their normal attacking power, so Lilith only got knocked out by them for a while.

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: The fifth panel contains sentences spoken by several people at different points in time: “He’s tough. That hit would have killed almost anyone. I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do for him. I’m sorry. Ilias, can you hear me? Please wake up, Ilias. Have […]

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Sandril shouldn’t have had a déjà vu. But this early in the story, I simply didn’t know yet that Sandril wouldn’t be together with the others in

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Lilith planned to tell them that Hel had chosen her as his successor as headmaster, and that she would assume the role of his assistant for the next couple years.

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Such a simple magic trick isn’t really worthy of Lilith. But since I found the scene so cute, I included it anyway.

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Lilith felt the disruption of the Bluestream caused by the spell she cast at the end of The Bipartite Mind weeks before any other wizard. Since it’s her own spell causing the disruption, this isn’t overly surprising, though.

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Contrary to Hogwarts, destruction of school property doesn’t seem to necessarily result in point deduction at the Academy of Cania.

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: I didn’t always remember to write all dialog lines of imps in third person and future tense and had to go back and fix already published pages occasionally.

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: On this page, we get the first glimpse of Lilith’s uncanny abilities in the field of time magic. The question is: Why is Ars so surprised by her abilities? Did Lilith intentionally hide her full potential during normal lessons? Or did Lilith have a […]

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Please take a look at the exuberant drawing of the shelf containing the staffs! That’s dedication to the craft of cartooning that you won’t find in Cyanide & Happiness!

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Ars’ recipe was inspired by a recipe featured in a short story I wrote in fifth grade about an incompetent wizard. It was a surprisingly well thought out text for a fifth grader, and if it hadn’t been full of spelling mistakes, I would […]

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: When the first pages of Gaia were published on 19 November 2011, I made sure this impressive page was shown on the front page. The golems may look a little too sophisticated for just an exam, but I wanted something that wows our new […]

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: When writing this scene, I had the idea to show the boys’ exam on the left side of each page and the girls’ exam on the right side. But I quickly realized that this wouldn’t work.

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Viviana is really showing off her skills as a thief with that dynamic jump out of the window. The last panel is really suspenseful with the guard getting ready to shoot Viviana. This early in the story no reader could know that the unnamed […]

My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est: Viviana’s dagger has a retractable blade filled with fake blood.
