Interview with the Head of United Nations Open Source Software Labs
canopic jug writes:Back in 2014-2015, during the 69 session of the UN General Assembly, the ICT Strategy (A/69/517), was quietly approved. In it were provisions encouraging ICT collaboration and a mention of Free and Open Source Software. In line with these provisions a special open source software development lab has been established with locations in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Additional regions will be added. The labs, the United Nations Innovation Labs (UNTIL), are intended to accelerate society by addressing some of the needs assessed as being urgent. The head of UNTIL is in an interview which might be of more symbolic value than anything else. However, it is news that the labs are getting off the ground.

Fall Back Sunday for the USA... Tonight!
RandomFactor writes:[Ed note: In Europe the clocks changed last weekend 26/27 Oct. And, as an aside, the EU is proposing scrapping the entire idea of changing clocks forwards/backwards which is receiving a lot of support.]Daylight Saving Time - innocently conceived by the notorious early riser Benjamin Franklin, was not instituted in the United States until 1918 (because the Germans did it two years earlier and were already up taking advantage of the extra hour of daylight, so the hyper-competitive USA just had to do it also), has a variety of downsides (more prevalent in the Spring) including - Disrupted Sleep, Car Crashes, Stress, Heart Problems, Disrupted internal Clocks, and a variety of negative effects related to these (Obesity, depression, reduced performance, reduced alertness, increased blood pressure, inflammation, harsher sentencing, etc. etc.)It is Fall however, and this Sunday is the better half of the DST coin where we gain an extra hour of sleep, and on Monday potentially smile briefly at our co-workers before staggering eerily towards the break room muttering cooofffeeeeeeee.

Trump Impeachment: House Votes to Formalise Inquiry
An Anonymous Coward writes:https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50246324"The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution to formally proceed with the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. The measure details how the inquiry will move into a more public phase. It was not a vote on whether the president should be removed from office. This was the first test of support in the Democratic-controlled House for the impeachment process. The White House condemned the vote, which passed along party lines.Only two Democrats - representing districts that Mr Trump won handily in 2016 - voted against the resolution, along with all Republicans, for a total count of 232 in favour and 196 against."Original SubmissionRead more of this story at SoylentNews.
